Fashion Scarf From Old T-Shirt
I recently had to give up wearing one of my favorite shirts. I had worn it so often that the poor shirt was starting to fall apart at the seams. While it was time to retire the shirt, I still wanted to keep some of it around so I decided it was a great opportunity to make a scarf out of some of the still good material.
Supplies
Here are some of the supplies I used to create my fashion scarf.
An old T-Shirt
Scissors
(Optional sewing machine)
Cut the Scarf Shape
I started by cutting the scarf shape out of the fabric.
I laid the shirt out, looking at where some good fabric was left. The bottom half of the shirt was still good so I was able to cut the shirt in half right at the waistline.
(NOTE: At this time you can choose to hem the line you just cut so the fabric doesn't fray. I chose not to hem the cut because the shirt was made out of a fabric that did not fray much and it was very stretchy so the hem would have ended up looking poor.)
Add a Fringe
After cutting the scarf part. I chose to add a fringe to the end of the scarf, creating a more appealing design.
I cut strands about 1/3 of the way up the fabric. Long enough to be noticed, but short enough that it didn't overpower the scarf.
NOTE: I started by cutting about 1" thick strands. This ended up making the scarf lay weird and look bulky so I cut the strands to be 1/2" thick instead. This created a better overall look. You can choose to make the strands either larger or smaller if you like.
Wear
Once you are happy with the look you can wear your new creation. I was very happy that I was able to re-purpose one of my favorite shirts and can still wear it in the time to come. Plus this is a super easy and quick way to recycle some old clothing into something new and fashionable.
