Fascinating Fascinator

I have seen several beautiful Fascinators on the Pinterest website. Some of them are quite expensive. For the last several weeks, I have been trying to figure out a way to make one myself without purchasing special milinery supplies.
Plastic canvas can be cut and shaped into just about anything you need. It holds its shape well and yet is still lightweight and flexible. It is also very inexpensive.
Another name for this cute headpiece is a Cocktail Hat. Most Fascinators have elaborate decorations made from feathers, tulle, beads, silk flowers, etc...There are endless designs that can be incorporated into a fascinator.

You will need plastic canvas, felt, paper, needle and thread, fabric scraps,(about 1/3 yard) a hair comb, small amount of tulle netting (about 1/4 yard) measuring tape and scissors.
You can cut 4 ovals out of one sheet (10-1/2" x 13-1/2") of plastic canvas. I pay 49 cents per sheet.
The felt is about 25 cents per sheet and you will be able to cut 2 ovals out of one sheet.

Cut an oval out of the plastic canvas 4-1/2" by 6-1/2". cut 8 notches out, 1/4" wide by 1-1/2" long.
Sew these notches closed. This step will make the hat curved.

Cut 2 ovals out of the felt.
Using the pattern that was used to cut out the plastic canvas, cut the notches out of the felt.
Pin the felt ovals onto the plastic, one over and the other under. This gives a little padding to the sharp edges where the notches are in the plastic canvas.
Hand sew the felt to the plastic around the entire edge.

Cut 2 ovals out of the fabric but do not cut notches into these. Pin one to the top of the hat and the other underneath.

Cut a strip of fabric on the bias (diagonally) 2" wide by 22" long. Hand sew around the edge of the hat. 1/2" seam allowance. Turn the bias strip of fabric to the underside of the hat. Fold under and pin. Hand sew all around the edge.

Hand sew the hair comb onto the underside of the fascinator.

I saw this Instructable and loved the way ravenking used a plastic soda bottle to create the decoration for her fascinator.
Instead of cutting several circles though, I just cut it into a spiralabout 1/2" wide.
I cut 2 lengths about 10" each. covered one with red ribbon and the other with yellow.

I cut a piece of tulle about 3" wide by 24" long. Gathered one edge with needle and thread and sewed it to the top of the fascinator.

Now, can't you just picture wearing one of these to a nice dinner or even a wedding? Maybe you have a friend or relative who would love to recieve one for a gift...The cost of materials to make one is less than $5, Let you imagination run wild and get creative!
