F.A.L.C.O.N. Gym
Fitness for Aerobics Life Cardio and Nutrition is a new and revolutionary gym that tests the limits of the human body. Due to the Building or Fire Code, the gym is limited to 50% of the maximum occupancy of the gym.
Max Occupancy: 100
Occupancy with Building or Fire Code: 50
Square Feet: 33,179
Cost: $476,300
Construction Site
I chose 14th Winthrop St. in Boston Massachusetts because of the local schools. Building a gym next to schools can cause an increase in membership compared to a location in a rural area. Although Boston may be an expensive area to house a business, the location of the gym, placed near hotspots of the town, returns a bigger amount of revenue back to the gym.
Construction Plans
I have laid out the construction plans of the gym. The machinery, site point, and muster point are all located on the bottom side of the lot because of the ease of getting the equipment onto the lot. The existing building on the lot must be taken down before the construction of the gym can begin.
Safety
When it comes to safety, anyone can be seriously hurt or injured at any time. It is important to put safety as our number one priority to ensure no injuries arise during the construction of this gym. With this said, the site is to be taped off by yellow caution tape at all times during construction. All builders working on this gym must wear a hard hat, rugged pants, and thick shoes. The gym must follow building codes and standards:

In terms of COVID precautions, all equipment is spaced out by 6 feet. It is recommended for members of the gym to distance themselves. The use of signage across the gym helps remind members to be safe!
Materials
The metal and wood framing for the gym helps build a strong and sturdy structure where it can lift a large weight of conditional loads and live loads. Boston does have continental weather meaning that it is important that the materials are strong enough to support the live loads and conditional loads. Materials inside the gym, like rubber mats, are chosen because of their non-slip qualities and softer surface compared to other materials. Other materials, such as wood, are chosen because of their acoustic sound-proofing qualities.
Foundation and Framing
The wireframe of the gym is important to support the weight of the materials and members of the gym. If the supports of the frame aren't great enough, the whole gym could collapse on itself.
Insulation and Drywall
The insulation goes in after the framing is done. After the insulation is put in place, the drywall sandwiches the framing, insulation, and everything else such as electrical wires and plumbing together.
Reception
There are 2 receptionists at the reception desk. Each receptionist is on an individual computer where they are able to respond to inquiries, check-in guests, and make sure everyone is healthy and safe before entering the gym. The receptionists are equipped with the proper materials to prevent the spread of diseases and illnesses throughout the gym.
Pool and Spa
The spa and pool are connected to each other. When you are down swimming your laps, you can relax in the spa or choose to head to the showers.
Showers, Changing Rooms, and Sauna
The showers/saunas/changing rooms are located right next to the pool and spa to avoid water in other parts of the gym. They serve a multipurpose function to save space throughout the gym, allowing for more equipment to be placed on other levels of the gym.
Lockers
The lockers are right behind the reception because of the convenience of the location of the showers/saunas/changing rooms. They feature a digital lock, so you are able to open and close your locker via an app on your cellular device. You are given a locker number by the receptionists when you enter the gym.
Juice Bar
After a long day of working out, you can enjoy yourself a nice healthy snack at the juice bar located on the first floor, next to the stairs. You can choose what fruits and juices go into your drink, so can always try something new. Included in each gym membership is one FREE drink every 24 hours.
Elevator
The elevators are located on the opposite side of the wall adjacent to the stairs. It is great for people who may not be able to take a regular flight of stairs. The maximum lift weight is 2,500 lbs.
Stairs
Prefer to take stairs instead of the elevator? No problem! This modern design of the stairs is awesome to appreciate while walking up the stairs.
Massage Room and Rehabilitation
Need to relax after a hard workout? Go to the massage room located on the second floor. If you prefer a massage chair, you are able to seat yourself onto one. If you prefer a masseuse, you are also able to request one. The massage rooms are also a great place to rehabilitate. It is great to stretch out muscles to be able to get your strength back up again.
Track
Prefer running on a physical track instead of a treadmill? No problem! Visit the track on the 2nd floor of the F.A.L.C.O.N. gym and start running! In the center part of the track, there is a shed where members can take out equipment such as batons and hurdles to better elevate their workout.
Aerobics, Cardio, and Strength
Located on the 3rd floor of the gym is where all the cardio and strength machines are. Want to do aerobics? Get a mat and start working out or go to the 1st floor to get your swim in!
Restrooms
Restrooms are placed on the 2nd floor of the gym. The restrooms are separated by gender. The restrooms highlight touch-free features, including the hand dryer and the automatic soap dispenser/sink faucet. To save some space, each stall has a slidable door.
Plumbing
Since the restrooms and showers are placed on top of each other, it creates a simpler approach to connecting them to pipes that run through the walls. It also saves material because less material is being used to connected the pipes from the restrooms to the showers.
Electrical and Renewable Energy
The machines located on the 3rd floor of the gym power the gym when in use. Solar panels are also placed on the roof of the gym to grasp energy from the sun and convert it into electricity. Each panel is controlled to follow the Sun when it moves. This is using proportional control.
I have calculated that the gym needs about 150 kW per day to sustain it. The solar panels and energy created by members running the machines in the gym help keep the electrical bill in the gym to a minimum.
Security
Security is a big part of keeping employees and members safe while in the gym. There are CCTV security cameras placed around the gym to ensure security. Blind spots are kept to a minimum to reduce malicious activity going under the radar.
