This is how you will build the Elite Archers' Ballista.

Supplies

  • 3x wooden beam ()
  • 1x 10ft. rope
  • 1x 10ft. PVC Pipe
  • 2x T-bone connector
  • 1x Nail
  • 1x 13in. bolt

Cutting

You will cut the wood into the following pieces:

  • 1x 1.5in by 3.5in by 4 1/3 ft. (Track; Label as piece(s) A)
  • 2x 1.5in by 3.5in by 2ft (Front; Label as piece(s) B)
  • 4x 1.5in by 3.5in by 4in (Sides of Winch; Label as piece(s) C)
  • 2x 1.5in by 3.5in by 7in (Mount; Label as piece(s) D)
  • 4x 1.5in by 3.5 in by 3.5in (Spool mount; Label as piece(s) E)
  • 4x 1.5in by 1.75in by 6in (Front; Label as piece(s) F)
  • 1x 1.5in by 3.5 in by 10in (Front; Label as piece(s) G)

- NOTE: Keep the additional wood

Cutting (contd.)

You will cut the PVC pipe into the following pieces:

  • x3 2ft. PVC (Label as piece(s) A)
  • x1 1ft. in length (Label as piece(s) B)
  • x2 8in. in length (Label as piece(s) C)
  • x2 10in. in length (Label as piece(s) D)
  • x2 4in. in length (Label as piece(s) E)

Cut the Track

Using plank A, cut it to the measurements provided (the track should let the ball roll freely)

NOTE: This cut will go through the entire plank.

Construct the Back Base of the Ballista

Screenshot 2020-11-19 at 3.26.45 PM.png
Screenshot 2020-11-19 at 3.26.55 PM.png

Stack 2 C planks on top of each other, this will form the walls. Screw them together with a diagonal screw that goes through both planks. Do this for both sides of the back. Then, use a G plank for the bottom. Attach the G plank to both of the walls constructed using C planks by screwing through the bottom of the G plank into the walls. Do this for both walls (like said previously).

Assemble the Spool Mount

Screenshot 2020-11-19 at 2.59.37 PM.png

Using 2 E planks, secure them in the following arrangement found in the left picture..

The following construction should result in these measurements.

  • length: 3.5in
  • width: 3.5in
  • height: 3in

Using the remainder of the E planks, arrange as followed in the right picture.

Drilling

Screenshot 2020-11-19 at 3.54.46 PM.png

Align the middle of the spool mount with the spool mount wall like shown. You should be able to insert a length of PVC through the entire thing and it should come out of the other side.

Next, drill a small hole 1in. away from the center of the middle of the spool mount (the inside piece of the spool mount), drill through the spool mount wall and stop at the rim of the inside piece. The diameter of this hole should be 1/2 of an inch.

Assemble the Spool Mount (contd.)

Screenshot 2020-11-19 at 3.52.32 PM.png

Insert PVC piece B through the hole of the wall of the spool mount, the end of this PVC should stick out on the other side. Use a t-bone connector to cap the right end (facing from the back). Then, take both of the PVC pipe Ds and attatch them to both ends of the t-bone.

Next, drill a screw or nail into the (middle piece of the spool mount) and (the PVC that's inside of the spool mount middle piece) to connect them.

Finally, take another nail and screw it only a little bit into the middle piece spool mount, it should NOT go through the spool mount middle piece into the PVC.

These steps seem confusing now, but will make sense later on.

Constructing the Front of the Ballista

Screenshot 2020-11-19 at 4.11.15 PM.png

Using plank B, cut two holes that are 2 inches in diameter as shown, do this to the other B plank as well.

Constructing the Front (contd.)

Screenshot 2020-11-19 at 4.12.53 PM.png

Cut a shallow dip that is 4 inches wide in all 4 plank Fs.

When we insert these in between the top and bottom of the front of the ballista, the frontmost plank Fs will face inward, and the backmost plank Fs will face outward (where the ballista would be shooting, for perspective).

Assembling the Front Frame

Screenshot 2020-11-19 at 4.24.20 PM.png

To construct the front frame, use both plank Bs as the top and bottom. Arrange all F planks as previously mentioned (refer to last step).

Assembling Front Mechanism

Screenshot 2020-11-19 at 4.27.34 PM.png
Screenshot 2020-11-19 at 4.27.39 PM.png

Screw in pipe A over the top of the front frame like shown in the left picture.

For the bottom on the front frame, screw one E pipe over each hole. Drill a screw through each end of each pipe like shown in the right picture.

Assembling the Front Mechanism (contd.)

Screenshot 2020-11-20 at 10.23.34 AM.png

Using 40ft of the rope, (use 20 feet for both bundles on each side) wrap it around the front like shown in the picture so that it fits through the holes we cut on the top and bottom of the frame. Keep doing so until there is no rope left, tie it off at the end.

Assembling the Front Mechanism (contd.)

Screenshot 2020-11-20 at 10.23.26 AM.png
Screenshot 2020-11-20 at 10.23.39 AM.png

Using the remaining 2 pipe A pieces, connect a t-bone on one end of each A piece. You will then slot these from each side of the front frame (the t-bone will be inside the front frame) in between each rope bundle with the t-bone positioned vertically (so it will fit in). Angle them outwards and back, it should look similar to a bow. Then you may turn the pipes horizontal, as the t-bones will act as a sort of locking mechanism to keep the pipes from moving.

Completing the Front Mechanism (contd.)

Tie a rope from each arm that we just assembled to each other, it will end up looking like a bow string.

If You Have Completed Every Step Correctly So Far, It Should Look Something Like This.

Completing the Mechanism

Screenshot 2020-11-20 at 10.23.48 AM.png

Tie the rope from the spool mount to the rope we just tied, if you turn the crank on the back part of the ballista, it should pull the rope bundle backward.

Constructing the Mount

Finally, we must construct the mount. This will allow you to adjust for different distances.

Drill a hole into each end of both plank Ds. This hole should be 1in. in diameter. Attach them to the bottom of the track, somewhat close to the middle.

Creating and Attaching the Mount Legs

Screenshot 2020-11-20 at 10.48.34 AM.png

Using the remaining wood, create 2 legs. These can be whatever size you think necessary, (long or short, doesn't matter as long as the back leg is longer than the front leg. This will allow for the angle to be adjusted accordingly.

Next, construct a base for the front leg that can support it and keep it in place. This can also be whatever size you deem fit.

Then, drill a hole into each leg big enough for a pvc pipe to fit through.

Finally, insert a pipe C in between the holes we made in the D planks we attached and the legs, this will hold the legs in place and allow the back leg to move and adjust.

OPTIONAL: Cap the PVC pipes on both ends (if you have the materials)
