Electronics Basics : Diode
If you don't like reading watch my video on Youtube!
I have made it simpler there.
Also Huge Thanks to www.JLCPCB.com for Sponsoring this project, You can order 2 layer PCB (10cm*10cm) only for $2 from their website. Built time for 2 layers PCB is only 24Hr with any color solder mask. Check them out and once again Thanks www.JLCPCB.com for Sponsoring this project.
Let's First See Working in DC
When diode's anode is connected to +ve and cathode to -ve it is conductive with small voltage drop.
Please note the above sentence is not perfectly true! i will tell you at the end.
Okay what if anode is connected to -ve and cathode is connected to +ve
Well the answer is it's resistance become ideally infinite
So How Can We Use It ?
You can use it as reverse polarity protection.
like I did with my arduino nano
Now Let Us Talk About AC
For this I am using a step down transformer to be safe.
We know diode is conductive only when Anode is connected to +ve and cathode to -ve
so in AC the diode will allow only +ve half cycle to pass(in my case, if you hook it reverse it will allow -ve half cycle) which is DC
So we can use this DC as power supply. But......
But....
It is a bumpy DC most of our components wont like it we can solve this problem by adding a capacitor at the output.
But as soon as we draw some current it become bumpy again because our capacitor charges only during +ve half cycle.
we can solve this problem by using Bridge Rectifier.
How Bridge Rectifier Works ?
During +ve cycle current flows through diode D1 and D3 and during -ve cycle current flows through D2 and D4
in this way we can manipulate -ve half cycle to charge our capacitor
Remember I said earlier that diode is only conductive when anode is connected to +ve and cathode to –ve actually the definition is when anode is connected to higher potential and cathode to lower potential it is conductive
