Eggs and Toast Earrings

If I had to choose one thing to eat for the rest of my life, it would be breakfast food. Avocado toast, sunny-side-up eggs, hash browns, bacon, the list could go on and on. So, when I heard about the Big and Small contest I knew I had to pay homage to my favorite morning meal: eggs and toast. There truly is nothing better than a runny yolk on top of perfectly toasted bread. And, what do I like as much as breakfast food: jewelry. Putting these two things together you get the cutest, most fashionable pair of eggs on toast earrings. As far as polymer clay goes, these earrings are fairly simple to make and only take a few supplies. They make for the perfect brunch earrings, or just something kooky to wear on a night out. They are also very easy to customize. Not a fan of eggs? Consider adding butter or fruit to your toast instead. The possibilities are endless!

Supplies

• Polymer Clay in yellow, white, tan, and translucent
• Clay tools - toothbrush for texture and a small round tool for shaping
• Chalk pastels
• Oven for baking the clay pieces
• Wire, headpins, or eye pins
• Pliers - I used the one-step looper as well as two flat-nose pliers
• Jump rings
• Stud earrings
• Glaze - I used Varathane Polyurethane but Mod Podge will also work
• Super glue

To create the toast, start with a medium-sized ball of tan clay. Shape this clay into a cube shape as seen in the first photo. Using a knife or other clay tool, slice the cube into half---this will create the two pieces of toast. Create two indents on the sides of each of the toasts using a round tool. Smooth out the edges to create a toast like shape as seen in picture three. Keep in mind that the toast pieces do not have to be perfect. This is supposed to be realistic, so embrace the crazy.

Once you are happy with the shape of your toast, it is time to add some texture. Using the an old toothbrush add some fine texture to your toast. Feel free to experiment with other tools to get a more realistic look. After, add some color to the edges of your toast using chalk pastels. I used an old paintbrush to lightly dust a dark rim around the toast, to give the allusion of a crust. If you so choose, add grill marks to the toast to make it appear freshly toasted!

To create the eggs, start with three parts translucent to one part white clay. Mix them together to create the perfect egg white color. Create a ball and cut it in half to create two smaller ballers. Flatten them out into small circles, then using your fingers mold the shape so it looks more like an egg. I chose to elongate one end, but feel free to add more dimension. For the yolks, obtain a small ball of yellow clay. Cut it in half to create two half spheres. Place on top of the egg white we created earlier to finish the egg. At this point, you may also choose to add some color to the boarder of the egg, to make it appear fried.

Place the two finished eggs on the pieces of toast. For the stud part of the earring, obtain two small and equal balls of yellow clay and flatten into circles. Ensure they are large enough to fit the base of your studs. Once ready, use a headpin, eye pin, or wire to create a hole at the bottom of each circle---this will be where the jump ring goes. Before its ready for baking, add an eye pin to each of the pieces of toast. If you do not have an eye pin, you can create one using wire and the one-step-looper or a set of pliers. Bake in the over according to your clay's package instructions.

After everything is done baking, insert a large jump ring into each of the yellow stud pieces. Glaze the yellow stud pieces as well as the toast with your choice of glaze. Let dry according to product instructions.

Once everything has dried, super glue the stud backs to the yellow stud pieces. Let dry for a couple minutes, then attach the toast to the jump rings. Add some earring backs and your eggs and toast earrings are ready to wear and share!
