Egg White Whiskey Sour

Cocktails made with egg whites taste great. The egg white adds a rich frothiness that isn't found in many other alcoholic beverages. I used to like regular whiskey sour drinks, but having tried one made with egg whites, it's difficult to go back since the addition of egg white makes the drink so much more enjoyable.

If you're the type of person that has qualms about ingesting raw egg whites, then re-hydrated egg white powder can be substituted. Prepared either way this is a great cocktail. The sweet and sour flavor paired with the froth and whiskey works very well together.

Ingredients used are:

2 oz whiskey*

1 oz lemon juice (~1/2 lemon)

1 oz simple syrup

1 large egg white (or egg white powder)

7-10 ice cubes

Tools needed:

1 cocktail shaker

1 citrus juicer and knife (if using fresh lemon)

If re-hydrating egg white powder

1 small bowl and whisk (if using egg white powder)

*Bourbon or Amaretto can be substituted for whiskey

The recipe for simple syrup is very easy, as the name implies.

Typically I make this in 1 cup batches, so add 1 cup of sugar to 1 cup of water in a small sauce pan. I often add the juice from one orange. Heat and stir until sugar has dissolved. Once all the sugar is dissolved, remove from heat and let cool. Simple syrup can be stored in a sealed container in the fridge for quite a while.

If using fresh lemon juice, use citrus juicer to squeeze half a lemon.

If using egg white powder, rehydrate with water and whisk until dissolved and frothy. Egg white powder should sit for a few minutes after the water is added.

Fill cocktail shaker half full with ice, approximately 5-7 ice cubes.

Add 2 oz whiskey.

Add 1 large egg white.

Add 1 oz simple syrup.

Add 1 oz lemon juice.

Shake vigorously.

Strain cocktail into a glass with two ice cubes in it. Add a maraschino cherry to garnish, sip and enjoy.

This is another great whiskey cocktail. Again, if making these for a few friends a 26 oz bottle goes quickly.
