The Problem

WhatsApp Image 2020-04-09 at 9.42.55 PM.jpeg

Some eggs are unable to hatch due to the lack of a hen around them, this may be because the hen abandoned the egg or even worse died before being able to hatch it, however I would like to take these abandoned eggs and help them hatch without the support of a hen.

The Question

Is it possible to replicate a hens actions to hatch a chicken egg in the place of hens?

The Research

After some research i found out that an egg is hatched under the influence of four variables:

Heat

Humidity

Motion

Oxygen

We also found out that a chicken egg hatches in 21 Days.

The Project

I will be creating an egg incubator that is supported by heat, humidity, Motion, and Oxygen to be able to hatch chicken eggs, without a hen.

The Hypothesis

If we put the eggs in a egg incubator which is supported by heat, humidity, oxygen, and motion, the eggs will hatch without the support of a hen.

The Materials

A cardboard box to turn into the incubator

A 120 w gas lamp (heat)

2 mini fans (air/cooling)

2 container filled with water and a sponge (humidity)

A soft towel (soft surface for eggs)

Wires

Thermometer

Water

2 Plugs

The Variables

Independent: Heat, Humidity, Movement, and Oxygen

Dependent: The Hatching of the Eggs

Controlled: Amount of water (for the humidity), Type of eggs.

The Procedure

We first begin by creating the incubator, we wire and connect all the fans and the light bulb to the plugs, then we put that in the box, next we place two sponges in two containers which we will fill up with water, and place it beneath the light bulb so that the light bulb heats the water and make it evaporate, creating humidity for the eggs.

The Test

We put 5 eggs in the incubator, over the course of 21 days we turned them from 3-5 times a day, and we refilled the sponges once a day. After the 21st Day no eggs hatched, we pinpointed this to the fact that our fans were not powerful enough. We opted to try again, to fix our mistake we introduced another fan, and instead of 5, we had 20 eggs this time. After the same procedure of turning and refilling the water, 6 eggs out of 20 hatched after 21 days.

The Conclusion

In the end, if we put the eggs in a egg incubator which is correctly supported by heat, humidity, oxygen, and motion, the eggs will hatch without the support of a hen.

The Reflection

In retrospect, we are overjoyed that our project was successful, however we hoped that more eggs would hatch, if we were to repeat this project we would find the reason that the rest of the eggs didn't hatch, so that we could hatch more eggs.

Relation to IB Learners Profile

We can relate our project to these two IB learners profile and they are caring since we care about the eggs enough to bring them and hatch them second thinkers since we thought of a way to preserve and hatch the eggs minimizing the damage.
