Easy to Sew Cloth Ear Saver

Here is a fast and easy solution to save those sore ears. I have listed directions on how to sew a simple ear saver inspired by other examples of DIY PPE products online.

Scissors

Sewing Machine or thread and needle

Cotton Fabric

Felt

2 buttons approximately 3/4" diameter

Iron

Cut down the felt to a 1" X 5" rectangle.

Cut down a piece of Cotton fabric to a 2 3/16" X 6 1/4" rectangle.

Fold the 2 3/16" X 6 1/4" rectangle in half. You may use an iron to crease the fabric in place before your stitch the end pieces together. The example photos demonstrate sewing using a Janome sewing machine but you can also hand sew the cloth ear saver. Sew the fabric with a basic stitch. Begin the stitch at 3/8" from the edge of the fabric. That gives you a 3/8" seam allowance. Repeat stitch at the other end of the rectangle. Leave the top of the rectangle open for now.

Once you are done sewing both ends of the rectangle, trim the corners of the rectangle with a pair of scissors. Cut the fabric at a 45 degree angle.

Turn the cotton fabric inside out creating a sleeve for the felt rectangle. Insert the felt rectangle inside of the cotton fabric. Use an iron to line up your fabric at the top of the rectangle and press out your corners.

Time to sew the top of the rectangle. The felt rectangle will be sewn into the cotton rectangular pocket.

I used a tight zig zag stitch to close off the top seam of the rectangle. You can also hand stitch the top piece together.

I used the button setting on the Janome Skyline S5 machine. If you are using a sewing machine to sew on your buttons make sure to use the proper stitch settings, foot and lower the feed dogs. Sew the 3/4"diameter button on approximately 1/4" from the edge of the sewn rectangle. Repeat on the opposite end for the second button.

Place on the back of your neck and latch on the elastic from your existing cloth face mask. Wear in comfort while social distancing. Be Safe!
