Easy to Make Dragonfly Pendant

IMG_20220125_141031434.jpg

This is a dragonfly pendant made from scrap pieces of paracord and a small piece of scrap suede or leather. It's easy and fun to make and looks good too.

I don't like waste so I save tail ends of paracord and offcuts of leather and suede from other projects. This is a great way to use some of those up.

What You Will Need

Some scrap ends of paracord - ranging in size from 6cm to about 12cm
2 small pieces of suede 2cm x 8cm
15cm piece of bendable wire
70cm length of rattail satin / suede / cord or whatever you want for going round your neck.
Scissors
Pliers
Small hole punch or something that will make a hole through the suede
Superglue

Make a Paracord "bead"

Take a length of paracord, cut the ends off and pull the core out of the middle.
Using a lighter gently heat the paracord ends and squash flat.
Now roll up the paracord into a "snail" and using superglue stick the end down.

Make More Paracord "beads"

Make more paracord roll-up "beads". I've varied the length of the paracord from 6cm for the smallest to 12cm for the largest.
It's up to you what colours you use and may depend on what colours you have.
I've chosen shades of blue and turquoise, but the choice is yours.

Make Dragonfly Wings

Using a piece of suede, cut out 2 pieces 2cm wide by 8cm long.
Shape the ends of the wings.
Glue the wings in the middle with a spot of glue.
Punch a small hole through the wings so they can be threaded.

Prepare the Wire

Take a piece of bendable wire about 15cm long.

Using pliers make a circular loop at one end.

Thread the "beads" and Wings

Decide on the order of your paracord beads. I've laid it out on my board to decide what looks best.
As you will see I have several left over "beads" for another time.

Now thread the beads and wings onto your wire.

Finishing Off the Wire.

Pull the beads tight on the wire then using the pliers form a loop on the top of the top bead.
This will stop the beads separating.
Now form a double loop of wire so the pendant can be hung.

Hang Your Dragonfly Pendant

Cut a length of rattail satin or whatever you are using for your necklace. I've used about 70cm, so it will go over my head. Heat the ends of the satin to stop fraying.

Loop the satin through the pendant wire and knot the satin ends.

Your dragonfly pendant is now ready to fly.

Wear Your Creation

Now your dragonfly pendant is ready - put it on and take it for a fly.
