Easy and Cheap Display Cover for Ikea Display SKÅDIS Shelf
I love to have minerals or the lens of the camera on the shelfs. The firsts to enjoy it, the seconds to easy access to them. The problem, you know, is the dust. The solution in a Ikea display SKÅDIS shelf it´s as easy and cheap as cut an acrylic or as polystyrene sheet and asemble it with a square coaster.
Supplies
- 200x300x2mm polystyrene or acrylic sheet (one per shelf. I used polystyrene that was what I found in the shop)
- 100x100mm square coaster (the most you like or goes better with your room decoration. I used cork coasters, that looks great between kraft cardboard boxes)
- Cutter
- Metal ruler
- Marking tape
- Cutting mat
- Hot glue gun
- Carboard (colour of your preference)
- A pair of clamping pliers
Cutting the Polystyrene Sheet
- Put the polystyrene sheet over the cutting mat, well aligned in horizontal position. At the end you should have two 100x300mm pieces.
- Fix the sheet and the mat with the clamping pliers to the desk.
- Use the masking tape to fix the ruler at 10cm mark.
- Pass the cutter 10 times over the sheet, using the ruler as a guide.
- Turn the sheet and repeat the process, passing the cutter 10 times over the previos cutting zone, but behind.
- Take off clamping pliers and the rules and put the marked zone of the sheet on the edge of the table.
- Press the side on the table with one hand, and the side on the air with the other hand. With care. The sheet should separate easily. If not, repeat some cuts. Avoid to forze the separation to prevent the sheet breake.
Assembling the Case
- Fix the ruler to the mat, to use it to prevent the piece of polystyrene moves while the glued process.
- With the hot glue gun, make a thread of hot glue on the side of a coaster and put it over one side of the polyestirene sheet. You should let some space to the second polystyrene piece. Think that the upper polystyrene sheet should rest on the lower one.
- Repeat with the second coaster.
- Make a thread of hot gluee on the sides of the two coaster and quikly press the second polystyrene piece.
Finishing the Cover
- Cut a 7x200mm carboard piece to hide the hot glue threads visibles throught the plastic cristal.
- Flex the cardboard strip by the middle to make easy the positioning.
- Glue the cardboard pieces with hot glue. To made the process easier, put a dot of hot glue in the corner to align the stripe. Next, glue the rest of the cardboard stripe.
Enjoy the Set Up
Put the cover on the display SKÅDIS shelf to protect your treasures or delicate objects.
