Easy Waterproof Fire Starting Kit

Ever go camping and discover you forgot the lighter? Worse yet, it just rained and there's no dry tinder to be found. Never be without your fire-starting powers with this easy-to-assemble waterproof fire starting kit.

Supplies

  • Ice cream bucket with lid and handle
  • Travel-sized shampoo bottle
  • Small plastic jar
  • Matches
  • Cotton balls
  • Petroleum jelly
  • Newspapers or shredded paper
  • Birthday candles (optional)
  • Dryer lint (optional)

Meet Your Match

Find a small empty bottle with a removable cap. Mini shampoo or lotion bottles from hotels are ideal.

Fill it with as many matches as you can.

Optionally, you can also do this with mini birthday candles or a lighter (in a slightly larger bottle, of course!).

Greased Lightning

Coat cotton balls in petroleum jelly and pack them into a small plastic jar. These will catch fire easily when lit.

Paper Trail

Pack an empty ice cream bucket with shredded paper or crumpled newspaper.

Optionally, you could also include dryer lint, wood chips, hay, or any other dry tinder.
