Easy Tin Foil Magic Wand

When I was younger, my mom made me wands by wrapping tin foil around wooden spoons. I would use them for play and as a prop for Halloween.

I thought I would try to make one for my daughter (though it does have to compete with the rainbow ribbon wand I made her before). The goal of this is that you can make a simple wand from few supplies, and when you are done, no damage is done to the spoon and you can just reuse it.

Supplies

Supplies:

  • Til Foil
  • Wooden Spoon (or other utensil) - I recommend as long a one as you can and with a thin/small scoop part as you need to cover it with your shape.
  • Cardboard or Cardstock - I just used a thick cardstock
  • Tape - this isn't necessary but is optional if you need a little help getting tin foil pieces to stay
  • Ribbon - again optional, but I used 1/4" ribbon

Paper Cutout

This is optional, but I don't have the ability to sculpt the tinfoil how I would want, so I started with a base. I printed shape outlines and cut them out, two for each wand.

When I came up with the designs, I measured the spoon so I could print off shapes that would cover most of it. But you don't need to be this picky about it.

Then I taped them a little to each other to hold them in place.

After doing this, I want to point out that going around those angles going in (such as the top of the heart or between the star points) are difficult. So be aware you might not get as much definition as you want.

Wrap in Tinfoil

Time to wrap the whole thing in tinfoil. I recommend doing this in as few and as big of pieces as you can as the smaller pieces will want to fall off and the goal is to just wrap it and leave it. Don't want to have to use tape.

If you have to get things to stick, I recommend just folding over a small piece of tap and putting it under the tinfoil. You don't want the tape to show if you can help it.

Add Ribbon

Optionally, add some ribbon for your wand!

Then you're done :)
