Easy, Stylish Burlap Coasters

I've been on a bit of a burlap kick lately. (Who hasn't?) I had an odd sized scrap that I couldn't think of any thing else to do with, so I decided to make some coasters. I'm pretty pleased with how they turned out. I plan on making lots to give away this holiday season! I did a bit of sewing, but this project is easily done with out sewing a stitch! Here's what you need to make the coasters.

Burlap
Scissors
Thread (optional)
Sewing machine (optional)

Cutting the Burlap to Get a Straight Edge

Burlap is impossible to cut straight without this step!!! Pick a thread in the burlap and gently pull. The burlap will bunch, that's OK, just keep carefully working the thread out of the burlap. This will be the cutting line.

Putting the Coaster Together

I decided to use a 5x5 inch square. Carefully cut out the desired number of squares. This takes a minute because of the way burlap has to be cut. Once your done cutting, pin the squares together right sides out.

Sew the Squares Together

Sew the squares together. I used one of the pretty stitches that my machine does that I rarely have a chance to use!

Add a Decorative Fringe

Carefully fringe the edge of the coasters. The topstitching will keep the edges from fraying to much. (If you choose not to sew, just use one square of burlap per coaster and carefully fringe the edge.) And thats all there is to making trendy burlap coasters!
