Easy Peasy Halloween Creatures

I was pulling sunflower stalks out of the garden - the spooky roots inspired me to make these Halloween creatures. The project took me just over an hour to complete. They look good among the house plants or out on the porch.

Sunflower stalks with roots

Yellow and orange construction paper, 4 black buttons, 4 google eyes, scissors, pencil, glue gun, glue sticks, black marker, your choice of ribbon or decorative embellishments, flowerpot with soil or container of your choice

optional: could use ping pong balls, bottle caps, etc. for the eyes

Making the Eyes

After you have pulled up your sunflower stalks cut them to the height you want (height will vary). I tapped the roots on the side of the raised bed to get most of the dirt off of them. I liked the bits and pieces that stayed in the roots, but if you are squeamish, you can hose the roots off but allow for drying time. Gather your supplies.

Fold the yellow and orange paper in half and draw a circle on each paper. Cut around the circle. You will have 2 yellow and 2 orange circles. Using 2 black buttons and 2 eyes for each color, I glued the buttons to the paper, then glued on the eyes. I used a black marker to add decorative lines around the paper circles. You may choose to make a different style eye - ping pong balls, bottle caps etc.

Making the Face

Glue the eyes on to the root faces.

Add Some Decorative Touches

I wrapped ribbon around the stalks. Starting near the top put a dab of hot glue to hold the ribbon in place. Then wind it down and glue in place at the bottom. Leave some of the stalk showing. Also leave the bottom portion of the stalk bare as it will be stuck in the dirt. I made ribbon bows to add at the neck and glued them on. Use your choice of ribbons and embellishments to create your unique creature.
