Easy Patrick Star Costume
I made this costume because I have watched a lot of Spongebob cartoons over the pandemic and I thought it might be fun to try to make a costume out of Patrick Star!
Supplies
Tip: Pre-wash all fabrics before use
3 yards pink fabric of choice (I used felt)
1 yard green fabric of choice (I used cotton)
1 yard purple fabric of choice (I used cotton)
Small amount of white fabric (for eyes)
Small amount of black fabric (for eyes)
Small amount of black mesh (optional)
Good fabric scissors
Chalk visible on pink, green, and purple fabric
Sewing machine (or hand sew, but it might take a bit longer)
Long sleeve shirt for outline
Pants for outline
Pins
Color appropriate thread
Lay Out Your Fabric on Flat Surface
Lay out your pink fabric on a flat surface like a table, put your long sleeve shirt on it and trace, but first, make sure you have enough fabric left over to make the other side of the body. Make sure you outline a bit farther away from your shirt so there will be room to turn it inside out and not be tight.
Cutting Out the Body (front)
Cut out the outline from the main piece of fabric, and toss it aside
Making the Body (back)
lay out your main piece of fabric back on your surface, then lay down your front side of the body onto the main piece and trace it as precisely as you can.
Cutting Out the Body (back)
Take the front off of the main piece, then cut out the back side. Lay out both sides on top of each other to make sure they are around the same size.
Testing the Size
Lay down on your unfinished body and make sure it fits your torso.
Trace the Pants (front)
Lay down your pants on the remaining large piece of fabric and trace it, but leave some space between the chalk and the edge of the pants.
Cut the Pants (front)
Cut the pants out and put them aside.
Trace the Pants (back)
Lay down the front side of the pants and trace it very close to the edge of it.
Cut the Pants (back)
cut out your outline of the back side of the pants and lay them on top of each other so you can see it they are the same size.
Trace and Cut the Head (front)
Make a large triangle on your biggest pieces of remaining fabric, and cut it out.
Trace and Cut the Head (back)
Trace your front triangle very precisely onto a different piece of fabric, then cut it out.
Trimming the Head (front & Back)
trim the top of the head so it will look more like a dome, then draw a face on your fabric
Cutting Out the Face
cut out your mouth and eye outlines.
Making the Mouth
Cut out a piece of black fabric for the mouth and a piece of white fabric for the tooth, then pin them into place.
Making the Shorts
fold your green fabric in half so it will cover both sides of the pants. Trace the sides of the green fabric where the edges of the pants are. Cut off the thin pieces that separate the costume and the edge of the fabric.
Making the Flowers
lay out your purple fabric on your green fabric and trace the flower shape onto your purple, and make sure that it isn't that big.
Cutting the Flowers
Cut out your first flower, then use this one as a template to cut 5 more flowers so you have 6 in total.
Sewing the Face Pt 1
iron your mouth and tooth so it will be flat for the sewing part.
Sewing the Face Pt 2
sew the mouth onto the side that you don't want to be visible
Sewing the Face Pt 3
Pin the tooth onto the side that you want to be visible, pin it, then flip it over so the thread strands will be on the inside.
Sewing the Face Pt 4
cut out your eyeholes.
Sewing the Face Pt 5
lay both sides of the head that you want to be visible facing the inside. Sew it together and turn it right side out.
Sewing the Face Pt 6 (OPTIONAL)
Hand sew eyes onto the sockets, leaving a hole where you can see through which will also be the pupil.
Sewing the Shirt
again, put the two sides that you want to be visible on the inside, pin them together, and sew. Turn right side out once finished sewing.
Sewing the Pants Pt 1
cut your green fabric in half, just at the folding mark. Sew one flower onto the top of each side of the green.
Sewing the Pants Pt 2
Take each piece of green fabric and lay it on top of either piece of pant fabric, making sure the flower is visible and at the top of the pants. Sew the green onto each side, making sure to snip off all excess thread.
Sewing the Pants Pt 3
Sew each side of the pants onto each other, again making sure that the visible part is facing the inside. Do not sew the top of the pants because then you will not be able to get in it. Also sew the parts where the feet are so they look very stubby.
Final Touches on Pants Pt 1
Make slits in the back of the feet so you can put your shoes through it.
Final Touches on Pants Pt 2
Put velcro in the crotch, back, sides and in between each piece.
Final Touches on Shirt
Put velcro in the same places as on the pants so they will hold together.
Put the Costume On!
Assemble costume on body, may need some assistance. If you want to learn how to make the jellyfishing net, search up Spongebob/Patrick Jellyfishing Net in the search bar. Enjoy!
