Easy PVC File Storage Rack

This is a super easy project that probably doesn't even need an Instructable but I decided to make one anyway. I usually store all my files in a drawer and I wanted a storage solution that allowed for easy access and clean up. I used some left over PVC pipe and scrap wood for this project. This is a quick and dirty shop storage solution. The best part is it didn't cost me a dime and I didn't have to go to the store for any supplies to make it.

I had some leftover 3/4 inch PVC pipe from a sprinkler repair which turned out to be the perfect size for my files. The only real consideration here is to make sure the files will fit but not fall through the pipe.

Next I marked the length of the pipe. I wanted the bottom of the files to stick out so I made the pipes a little shorter than the overall length of the files. I used a PVC scissor cutting tool to make the cuts but you can use a hack saw or a regular wood saw for this part. It really doesn't have to be a pretty cut, it just has to be cut to length. With the first one cut I used it to measure the rest of my tubes.

Next I measured down about 1-1/4 of inch, this would be were I would drill my larger holes. Top tip when drilling into a pipe secure the piece in a clamp first, this will help keep it from moving and rolling on you when you drill.

I used a stepped bit to drill the 1/2 inch hole but you could use a 1/2 inch drill bit instead. You don't want the hole to go all the way through to the other side. This hole is just for clearance of the screw head. This will make more sense in when I assembly everything.

Next I drilled a 3/16 inch pilot hole through the other side of the PVC pipe. In the last pic you see the large hole in the front and the smaller hole in the rear.

I had one file that was barely just to wide for the 3/4 inch PVC pipe. So I got my heat gun and heated up the PVC just enough to soften it and then smashed it down with a gloved hand to give it a sort of oblong shape. Now the file will fit in the PVC pipe.

I had some leftover scrap wood which was the perfect length to attach the PVC tubes too. I first predrilled some holes and then attached the file holders with screws. I decided to attach it to a piece of scrap wood so I could have the flexibility to move the whole storage unit in one piece if I chose too.

Next I attached the file storage unit to the side of my work bench with two screws. I put on the side of my bench and so far I like where it is, it hasn't gotten in the way and is still convenient and at hands reach. Like I said in the beginning this is a very simple project but I thought some one might find it helpful.
