Easy Homemade Ice Cream
Preparation time: approximately 20 minutes
Materials Needed:
- 1 large (gallon freezer size) plastic ziploc bag
- 1 medium (quart freezer size) plastic ziploc bag
- ¾ cup rock salt for ice cream
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 tbsp white granulated sugar
- ¼ tsp vanilla extract - or any other flavor extract of choice
- 3-4 cups ice to fill the larger Ziploc bag about halfway
- Whisk
- Mixing bowl
- Measuring cups/spoons for measuring ingredients
- Spoon (for eating ice cream)
- Bowl (optional to put ice cream in)
- Food coloring (optional)
**You may want to lay some newspaper down before beginning, as this project can get messy when the ice begins to melt**
Gather Materials.
Begin by Putting the Ice in the Larger Ziploc Bag and Setting It Aside.
Add ½ Cup Heavy Cream, 1 Tablespoon White Granulated Sugar, and ¼ Teaspoon Flavor Extract to the Mixing Bowl – Whichever You Choose to Use
If you choose to use food coloring, this is where you will add 4-5 drops of it.
Whisk the Ingredients Together Until Blended Evenly.
The entire mixture should look the same - no part darker or lighter than another.
Pour the Liquid Mixture Into the Smaller Ziploc Bag.
Pour the Rock Salt Into the Bag With the Ice.
Be sure to ONLY put the salt into the bag with the ice, and NOT into the bag with the cream mixture.
Move the Bag Around to Distribute the Salt Among the Ice.
Seal the Smaller Bag Tightly, and Place It Inside the Bigger Bag. Then, Seal the Bigger Bag Tightly, Ensuring the Smaller Bag Is Inside.
Shake Vigorously (up and Down AND Side to Side to Allow for Even Distribution of the Cold) for Approximately 10 Minutes, or Until the Mixture in the Smaller Bag Thickens Into Ice Cream.
You may choose to wear gloves here, a the bag/ice gets very cold and might pose a risk of frostbite.
You can also periodically check the cream mixture to see if it has frozen. If not, continue shaking the bag.
Take the Smaller Bag Out of the Larger Bag, Enjoy!
You may want to rinse the smaller bag in COLD water in order to avoid salt residue from getting into your ice cream!
