Easy Flower Head Wreath- Quick, No Glue
Summer celebrations should always have beautiful flower head wreaths. Floral crowns elevate lemonade on the porch, birthday parties and meandering walks along the creek. They are also quick, inexpensive to make and a fun intergenerational activity. Zip ties are the secret - no tools or hot glue required. Happy summer!
Supplies
All supplies can be purchased at the Dollar Store.
- Artificial flowers including greenery( small flowers work better)
- chenille stems AKA Pipe cleaners, (green if available but any color will work)
- Ribbon
- Zip ties- the key to quick, easy success!!
- Scissors
Wreath Base and Initial Fitting
The basic wreath base is made out of six chenille stems. Loosely twist two stems together. Then twist the three sets into a circle, leaving about one inch at the end of each connection. Check for a basic fit by placing it on your head. Two fingers should be able to fit under the wreath base.
Leaf Base
Wrap the leaf garland around the chenille base, secure with the “tails between the connections
Flowers
The front of the wreath will be between two of the connection “tails”. Trim the flowers from the main stem leaving a smaller stem. To position the flowers, insert the stem between the twisted chenille stems. As you are working all flowers should be facing up towards the ceiling, Over lap the flowers, so the crown has a full abundant look. Don’t worry if it looks messy and floppy.
A Crown for Many Summer Seasons
Zip ties are the secret to a long lasting head wreath that will withstand being tossed into the air, shared with friends, left out in the rain and still look great. Using zip ties secure the flowers and leaves to the base. MAKE SURE THE ZIP TIE CONNECTION IS ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE HEAD WREATH, otherwise it will be uncomfortable to wear.
Snip, Snip, Snip
Trim the zip ties and any excess flower stems. Okay, ideally, you will use much smaller zip ties, but my motto is create with what you have and I had big zip ties. (But I loved that they were green, LOL)
Ribbon Wrap
Starting at the back, tightly wrap the ribbon in an overlapping pattern, lifting the leaves and flowers out of the way. As you are wrapping, you may find additional stems that need to be trimmed. The wreath only requires one ribbon wrapping, but a decorative second ribbon can be added, if you wish, as well as ribbon streamers cascading down the back.
Summer Celebrations
Do a final fuff and tuck, try it on, celebrate the beautiful days of summer.
