Easy DVD-wall

This project started with an ugly wall in my hall. I was thinking about an easy way to take this eye-sore out of sight. The solution was also a good way to store my growing dvd-collection:

The DVD-wall!

You Will Need

Get the Right Profiles

Measure your wall

First you will need to measure how big you want to make your wall.
You will both measure your wall in cm (or inches if that is your thing) and in DVD's
My wall is very long so it makes no sense to measure the length in DVD's. (It is 420 cm)
The hight of my wall will be 6 DVD's on the right and 4 on the left.

The profiles

First I wanted to use h-profiles, but I found out that they don't exist, or at least are hard to get in the right dimensions. So I settled for Z-profiles.
You will need Z-profiles that are at least 15 mm deep, because that is the thickness of a DVD.
The hight of the profiles and the thickness of the aluminum is not so important.
You will get the nicest result if you can find the profiles in the length that your DVD-wall will be. (for me that was 420 cm)
Because mij bottom DVD can stand on the plinth, I don't need to start with a profile. So I will need 6 profiles, Four long ones and 2 shorter ones.

Preparing the Profiles

Prepare the profiles
  • Measure the length of your wall
  • Saw the profiles to length
  • Find out where the wood is behind your drywall (I have drywall, you might have an other type of wall)
  • Mark and drill holes in the profiles where the wood is in the wall
  • Countersink the holes with a countersink drill bit or a big size drill bit

Mounting the Profiles

Mount the profiles
  • Place a DVD on the plinth (if you can't start that way, you might need to start with a profile that you will level with a level :) )
  • Because I want a little bit of space between the DVD and the profile, I put some coins underneath the DVD.
  • Lay the first aluminum profile on top of the DVD and screw in the screws.
  • Repeat this for all your profiles
If you countersinked nicely, your screws will be flush with the profile.

Add DVD's

Now just add DVD's
It will be easy to put them in and take them out. Just lift them on the bottom.

It will be easy to use this idea for CD's or perhaps even books?

For me it worked great although it does make me more conscious about my DVD collection ;)
The ugly part of the wall is completely hidden and that was my goal!
