Easy DIY Medieval Stone Spear

In this we will be making a cool stone spear with materials from your backyard!

I like using SUPER hard rocks for the head of the spear and nice and heavy and strong sticks for the staff part of the spear so that it is fit for throwing, cosplay, and whatever you like!

Supplies

In the pictures you can see I only have a knife, twine and loppers, because everything else will be collected in the later steps.

Cut Your Staff

In this step you need to cut yourself a stick, now when you think about a stick you probably think about a flimsy little thing with a couple branches sticking out, well, that is not what I'm thinking about right now, so just listen to me, you need a thick, sturdy staff that is heavier at the top, so that it is good for throwing. Make sure that it is not dead, rotting, or with fungus growing on it. if the stick doesn't have any of these, then it probably good. I always just cut it so that its bigger on the bottom and flip it upside down. So, grab those loppers, and head out there!

Cut the Notch

So, you cut your staff? Okay, now I'll tell you what to do next. grab the heavier side of the staff and then grab your loppers, then cut a small notch in the staff and put your knife in, blade first, and grab the dull part of the knife, the opposite from the blade, and pull down, widening the gap so that the rock will fit, be really careful, in this step, so that you don't get cut, if you want you can wear gloves, to protect your hands. When the gap is wide enough, slowly wedge your knife out. So, you're ready for the next step? Okay, let's go.

Find Your Rock

As the name implies, you need to find the rock that will end up as the head of your spear; the rock should be thin and sharp at the tip, so that it can penetrate dirt if you want to throw it. I always do this to test the strength of the rock.

Grab the rock in one of your hands on one end, do the same on the other side, now try to snap it, if the rock snaps, it's not strong enough, if it doesn't snap, then its strong enough. Okay, now let's head to the next step.

Make the Spear

For this step you need the rock from the previous step, twine, and the stick you made before. Make sure the gap in the end of the stick is big enough to fit the rock in, if it's not big enough, you can grab either end of the gap and pull until you can fit the rock inside and it does not wiggle around at all. Now grab the twine and wrap it around where the rock meets the stick, wrap as tightly as possible, then tie in a tight knot.

Good Job!
