I decided to try and create a prototype hand because I wanted to try and make something that expands further than creativity, as this is something I've never done before.

Supplies

Supplies:

  1. Cardboard
  2. Paper Straws
  3. Scissor
  4. Strings
  5. Tape
  6. Popsicle sticks
  7. Drill
  8. Pencil/Pen/Sharpie
  9. Hot glue
  10. Saw
  11. Wooden stick
  12. Wooden scraps

Place Hand on Cardboard and Create an Outline of Your Hand

Using a pencil, pen, or a sharpie, create an outline of your hand on the cardboard. Make sure your hand is steady so it won't ruin the appearance of your cardboard hand. Once finished, get a scissor and slowly cut the outline of your cardboard hand.

Cut Paper Straw

Once you're done with your cardboard hand, cut the straw into small pieces using scissors. This will allow the hand to actually move and bend. After cutting it, use hot glue to help stick the paper straws onto the finger. Make sure there is enough space between each paper straw.

Cut String

Now, you would have to get some strings, as this will be needed to actually help curl those fingers. When cutting the strings, make sure it has some excess length at the end, allowing you to tie it up with other strings. After cutting all the strings to your desired length, slowly guide it through the straw holes. Hot glue the string at the tip of the fingers so it would stay in place when you pull on the string. After guiding all 5 strings through the paper straws, tie them together and put tape around it so it would not move.

Create a Scissor Lift

Now, grab like a bunch of popsicle sticks, as you will now have to make a scissor lift. To make things safer for you and the popsicle sticks, try and layer about 5 on top of each other, before using the drill to create holes at the left, right, and center of the popsicle stick. Now, make a pattern (criss--cross)where each hole of the popsicle stick is aligned with the one under/above it. Once done, grab a thin wooden stick, before cutting it into small pieces using a saw or box cutters. You would now take these thin wooden sticks, placing them into all of the holes. Then, take a small flat wooden scrap, before cutting them into small squares and drilling a hole inside of them so you could put it on and around the wooden sticks. Make sure you put it on both sides. To keep the wooden scraps stable and around the wooden sticks, use hot glue and put a tiny amount around each stick. Now, you've created a scissor lift! This allows your cardboard hand to actually move.

Assemble Everything

Finally, assemble! But firstly, quickly cut out a small rectangular cardboard that goes in between the cardboard hand and the scissor lift. Once done, just hot glue the cardboard hand on one side of the cardboard, and hot glue the scissor lift on the other side of the cardboard. Now you've created a simple prototype of a hand out of cardboard and scraps!
