Easily and safely engrave your tools at home with minimal materials and no dangerous chemicals.

Supplies

•Vinyl die cut stencil (call a print shop, they are cheap)

Metal Prep

Sand the part to remove any oxides or other crud as these can make for an uneven etching.

Degreasing

Clean the part with acetone to remove oils and grime. Let it dry.

Apply Your Stencil and Mask Off the Area

Apply your stencil and rub it down really well. Use the sticker's backing and not your bare fingers, as that would just get oil on the clean part. Protect the surrounding metal with some good duct tape.

Make Salt Water and Hook Up Your Part

Make a strong solution of table salt and water, then break out your car battery charger or jump box.

Attach your positive (red) lead to the part you are etching. The negative (black) lead is your working end that will hold your cotton ball (the etching head).

Throw a few cotton balls in your container of salt water. Pick one out, squeeze half the water out and clip it into the jaws of the negative lead.

Time to Start Etching

Power up your power source and lightly press the salt water soaked cotton ball on the the stencil for a few seconds at a time. You should hear sizzling, see bubbling and steam. The cotton ball will begin to turn dark. This means it is working! Dont hold it too long. This will make heat that could dislodge your stencil. Then you're in trouble.

Clean It Up and Enjoy.

Once you are satisfied with the etching's depth, remove the stencil and masking and give it a wipe down with WD-40.

All done! Enjoy!
