Easily Grow Spring Onions
I have been gardening for many years. We are getting ready to do some landscaping where I would normally plant vegetables. This year I will grow vegetables in pots, starting with these spring onions.
Buy a Package of Spring Onions
I bought some spring onions to use in a recipe, but I didn't need to use this many. Now I have enough to last me all summer by planting the ones I won't be using.
Grow Some in Water
You can grow spring onions for several weeks in a vase or a glass filled with water. Change the water every day to keep the water fresh.
Plant Some in a Pot
You can plant the root end of spring onions in a pot filled with potting soil. Just dig a hole, put the white part of the spring onion deep enough to be covered with soil. Press down around each onion to remove any air pockets. Water it every few days to keep the soil moist and the spring onions will continue to grow.
Plant the One From the Vase
This is the root end of the spring onion I had in the vase with water. It was starting to look droopy. When this happens, plant it in the pot outside with the others.
Plant These Too!
These are the bottoms of spring onions that were starting to go bad in my refrigerator. Cut off the tops.
Plant the Bottoms
You can plant the bottoms under a tree like I did with a small amount above the ground. Just dig a hole, put the spring onions in and cover with soil. Press to remove any air. Water them if they start to get dry. You can actually plant them just about anywhere you would like them to grow in your yard. They are very hearty and they will thrive!
The Bottoms Are Growing!
Those spring onion bottoms have new growth on them!
New Growth in the Pot
The spring onions are growing well in the pot. I like having them on hand. Just snip off some whenever you need them. You will have enough spring onions to last the entire summer just from using the ones you could have thrown away. I hope you try to grow your own spring onions. They don't need a fancy pot, or fancy soil. Just plant them in some dirt where it is convenient and enjoy watching them grow!!!
