EMERGENCY RGB LED FLASHER
INTRO: EMERGENCY RGB LED FLASHER
This Instructable was half done before I even started it.
It all began after I ordered a 5 LED BACK RED BICYCLE LIGHT with 7 different Flashing modes from Ebay.
I was impressed with all the flashing modes for a cost of under $2.00 U.S.
But it seemed to be lacking in one thing ….. "COLORS" …..
That is when I thought of a “CONVERSION” of this Red Bike Light into an
"Emergency Vehicle Breakdown Light".
Not with Red Lights … but with brilliant FLASHING RGB LEDs ...
…. flashing at random patterns determined by their internal chips.
PROJECT PREVIEW:
Above the INTRO is what the original 5 LED RED BICYCLE LIGHT looks like
as opposed to the resulting EMERGENCY FLASHING RGB LED LIGHT.

Small Phillips Screwdriver
Soldering Iron
Solder
Hook Up Wire
Super Glue
THE FLASHING RGB LED:
The FLASHING RGB LED:
Above is a picture of a 5 mm FLASHING RGB LED - the main component.
It flashes by using an Integrated Circuit that is built into the LED itself to produce a pre-programed pattern of both slow and fast colorful flashes.
ORIGINAL 5 LED BICYCLE BACK LIGHT OPERATION:
ORIGINAL 5 LED BICYCLE BACK LIGHT OPERATION:
The original 5 LED Bicycle Back Light – when opened – takes qty 2 AAA Batteries.
The 5 LEDs are clear but produce a bright Red Light through the Red Lenses
when illuminated through the upper front plate.
The Push Button contacts an integrated circuit which switches the light
to produce 7 different modes as described in the picture above.
THE "CONVERSION":
The CONVERSION to the EMERGENCY RGB LED FLASHER:
Here are the steps to "convert" the parts to produce the RGB LED FLASHER.
Remove the Red Front Lens Plate of the Bicycle Light.
Remove the 2 Phillips Screws on the RGB LED Front Panel
Desolder and Remove the 5 Clear LEDs
Solder on the 5 Flashing 5mm RGB LEDs
Solder the On-Off Switch in-line with the BLACK wire from the Battery Holder.
Put the Battery Holder wires through the Back Plate Hole - (formerly the Push Button location)
Solder the Battery Holder Wire ends to Points “A” and “B” on the back of the Circuit Board.
Wire and Solder all 5 LEDs on the Back of the Circuit Board – in PARALLEL.
Replace the 2 Phillips Screws on the RGB LED Front Panel.
Press and Click the Red Front Lens Plate back on.
Glue the On-Off Switch to the center end of the Battery Holder.
Glue the Battery holder to the center of the BACK CLIP.
Connect the 9 Volt Battery to the Battery Holder.
THE FINAL PRODUCT:
The FINAL PRODUCT is now ready to use.
Turning the on-off Switch to ON will begin the flashing cycles of all individual
IC CHIPS inside each of the 5 RGB LEDs.
Since each of the 5 LEDs do not activate at exactly the same time ....
.... the combination of color patterns seen is in the thousands.
I produced this flasher to be used as an EMERGENCY ROADSIDE FLASHER
for any vehicle having a breakdown .
* It would be useful in making sure oncoming traffic sees your vehicle
ahead and makes the necessary moves to avoid getting close to it.
It would also draw the attention of any oncoming police or emergency
vehicle that would notice your emergency and pull over to aid you.
===========================================================
Note:
This RGB LED FLASHER is also the most mesmerizing project I have ever made.
It produces multiple color light patterns that continue to draw attention to it.
Ironically - it has a calming effect if stared at for several minutes.
