EL Wire Subwoofer Lamp

In this Instructable I will show you how to make an EL Wire lamp out of an old subwoofer. I wouldn't suggest using a good subwoofer cause they are costly, mine was blown so it was perfect.

Required Materials

You will need:

An old sub
1 way switch
2 AA batteries
self-starting screws
9' of EL Wire
2 female slide connectors
wire cutters
wire strippers/crimpers
hot glue

Disassembly

The sub I used was already disassembled but you can see there isn't much to them. First you have to cut the cone off the basket to get to the spider. Next you need to cut the spider as close to the basket as possible. Once its cut the cone assembly should come out. Next flip it over and remove the screws holding the magnet in place (not all subs have the screws on the bottom). When the magnet is out you are ready for step two.

Cut the Hole for the Switch

Now you need to cut a hole in the dust cap to house your switch.

Cut the EL Wire

Cut the El Wire and strip the ends then put the connectors on.

Install the Battery Pack

After the wires are connected you can install the battery pack in the dust cap and hook up the switch. Make sure it's wired like in the doodle or you batteries wont last.

Running the EL Wire

Now you can run the EL Wire any way you want using the hot glue to secure it to the sub.

Assembly

Now you screw the dust cap onto the basket with the Self-starting screws.

Testing

Now install your AA batteries and make sure they are fully charged. Then go into a dark room and flip the switch.
