Cut the hole into a square shape for easy install of new piece.

Screw on the backing so that the new piece of sheet rock has something to be screwed too.

Cut new piece the same shape and size of the hole.

Screw on the new piece.

Mud in the seam. This may take multiple coats of mud. Sand the mud smooth and re-apply.
