Drumstick Wall Art

This project came out of the lockdown when we couldn't travel but relied on YouTube to show us the world. In a Florida theme park video, we spotted artwork made from drumsticks. We loved it and knew it would be a perfect addition to the living room that also featured an upcycle drum table.

We got to work designing a piece that would be perfect in the space where we wanted to hang it in the living room.

Since we didn't have a bunch of drumsticks, we ordered them in bulk from Amazon. We used leftover paints that have been used throughout the house.

We took a screenshot of our inspiration art. After laying out the unpainted drumsticks, we decided to double the length to better fit the space. The numbers (which we doubled) are the number of drumsticks we want to paint in the six colors we are using.

We set up a painting station on a vinyl-covered table to contain the mess. The drumsticks are slightly raised on wood skewers.

We used six colors so each of us was responsible for painting three colors each.

Arrange

Once the drumsticks were dry, we arranged them in the color order we wanted and then staggered them. We worked upside down so we could keep the unpainted drumsticks that still had a visible logo pointing towards the back so they wouldn't be seen in the finished art.

We cut a board the length of the art and painted it the same color as the wall.

To secure the drumsticks, we used construction adhesive along the length of the board and then carefully inverted it onto the backside of the art piece.

We weighed it down with all the heavy things and allowed it to dry for 24 hours.

Add Hanging Hardware and Install

We added a French cleat to the center back of the board and the other half of the cleat to the wall.

We previously had these old windows in this space but wanted to remove them when we realized that they were probably painted with lead paint and thus could be an environmental hazard. This is the wall after removing the old art installation.

We centered the other half of the French cleat on the wall and added the drumstick art piece. French cleats are an easy way to hang artwork plus you can adjust the art right or left a little bit if it's not quite centered.

We added some battery-powered picture lights that turn on with a remote.

Here you can see our upcycle drum table in the foreground. The new artwork perfectly complements the table.
