Drone Payload Drop System

DROPPING STUFF FROM A DRONE

I originally had this idea a few months ago, when I was looking up things dropped from drones. All of the videos I found were mechanical and needed to be wired into the drone. I didn't want to accidentally damage my drone in anyway, so I thought, what if when you do a certain movement on the remote control, it will fall.I originally thought of using the gimbal on my drone, but I didn't want to put a strain on the motors. So then I came up with this. The idea was simple, when I tilt the drone, it will slide off and fall. For a more descriptive tutorial, check out the video.

The materials for this project are simple.

You will need:

A wire coat hanger

Electrical tape

A nut

String

Tools:

Wire cutter

Measuring tape

Bench Vise

Hammer

Preparing the Coat Hanger

For this step, you will need to cut directly in the middle of the coat hanger. Then, you will have to cut off the top hook part of the coat hanger. Next, you will want to get both "v" shaped pieces straight. I brought both of them over to my bench vise and bent them to shape. You should end up with two fairly straight pieces.

Adjusting to Drone

In my case, I have the Phantom 4, I measured the bottom to be around 7 inches, and added an extra half inch to each side so it can wrap around the bottom of the legs. This can easily be adjusted to any drone. I marked about 3/4 inch from each side, which made the total length of it 8 1/2 inches. I then brought it to my bench vise and bent the ends facing the same way.

Dropping Mechanism

This is the piece that that the object is going to slide off of. I used the other piece of wire to make this. The channel needs to be narrow so the nut cannot slip through. (You might be able to see how this is going to work by now) The channel should be about 1 inch long. I hammered the wire to make the channel thinner. After that, I put it in the bench vise, and spread the wire back out, except for the channel that I made. I then measured and made it so that it was the same length as the other, and bent the ends.

Putting It Together

To put the two pieces together, face the opening of the channel towards the other side. Wrap a piece of tape around the tip of the channel and wrap it around the other wire. In order to not scratch my drone, I taped a piece of tape around both of the ends.

Attaching the Payload

Attaching the payload is very simple. All you have to do is make sure that the knot that you made on the end of the string is bigger than the inside diameter of the nut. Then you can tie your payload to the end of the string.

Done!
