Drawing and Shading a 3D Shape

0.jpg

Hi, our names are Mike and Will from Mr. Gifford's Grade 9, Computer Science Class. We decided to demonstrate how to make a shaded three-dimensional cube, to enhance not only our drawings but other uprising artists as well!

Supplies

  1. 8.5 in by 11 in piece of paper
  2. Sharp Pencil of your choice
  3. Clean Eraser
  4. 12 in Ruler
  5. Flat Surface

Gathering Materials

  1. Grab a 8.5 in by 11 in piece of paper
  2. Place the paper on a flat surface
  3. Then take a sharp pencil of your choice and put it with your initially gathered supplies.
  4. Proceed by grabbing a 12 in ruler
  5. Place that with your already chosen tools
  6. Finally grab yourself a clean eraser
  7. Gather all of your materials on your flat surface and you are ready to begin!

Drawing the Shape

First, start by drawing a square 2 in by 2 in, using your ruler

Then, draw two diagonal lines, both 1.5 inches from one side of the square extending from each corner. Simply connect them with a vertical 2 inch line using a ruler.

From the left side of the square, draw a diagonal line, 1.5 inches, from the top corner.

Connect both of the 1.5 inch diagonal lines using your ruler.

Now that you are done with the basic shape, you are ready to shade...

First pick where your light source is coming from, preferably the left side of the page.

This will help with shadows and shading.

From the bottom right of the cube, draw 2, 2 inch lines extending from each corner. Then, connect.

From the previous step, start light from the end and proceed to shade darker as you get closer to the cube.

Then, on the perpendicular face of the cube, completely shade it dark.

On the adjacent side, start dark but as you get close to the light source start shading lighter.

Finally, on the top of the cube, start shading dark from the back and lighter to the front.

You are now done! You are now ready to become a great artist and enhance your drawings!

Thank you!
