Dragon Egg Christmas Ornaments
Hello nerdy crafters!
Who doesn't like dragons? They are magical and epic. And you know what else everyone likes? Christmas! So why not combine those two to make the ultimate Christmas ornament :)
Supplies
- string or thin ribbon
- aluminium foil
- air dry clay (or: cornstarch + white glue)
- straw or similar object
- (acrylic) paint and paintbrush
Optional:
- glitter
- jewels / rhinestones
Form the Egg
Tie a knot into a piece of string or thin ribbon. Here I used white yarn that I painted black lateron.
Then take a piece of aluminium foil and wrap it around your string. Try to get as close as possible to an egg shape.
Optional - Simple 2 Ingredient Clay
We're going to use air dry clay to make the scaly texture. If you don't have any store-bought clay, here is a simple 2 ingredient clay using cornstarch and white glue (PVA glue, Elmer's glue..)
Start off by pouring some white glue in a bowl-like container. Then gradually add cornstarch and mix it until it forms a lump.
Now put some cornstarch on your hands (trust me ;P ) and knead the clay in your hands. If it's still sticky, add more cornstarch until you like the consistency.
Add Clay and Texture
Add a layer of clay to your egg that's not too thick.
To add a scaly texture, use a straw or other tube/ring-like objects to create rings on the egg. With the store-bought clay this was quite easy, but my homemade clay was a bit too soft. If that's the case for you too, just let the egg dry a little bit and come back to it.
Paint
I like to use black acrylic paint as the base for the dragon eggs.
Then I add the main color with a dry brush to make the texture stand out.
You can also add some metallic paints for extra shininess.
Extra tip: To make all kinds of metallic colors, first paint the egg silver and then use markers on top (it's more vibrant than mixing opaque paint into metallic paint)
Make It Shiny
You could leave the eggs like that, but to make them look extra festive, glitter is the answer!
Rhinestones are also a nice way to give them some bling.
Now all that's left to do is to decorate your tree or other places with these christmassy dragon eggs! Of course you can leave out the string as well.
I hope you like this idea and have a happy and safe Christmas time!
