Getting Your Wood

To get your wood, completely take apart a pallet of wood. We used a 42 x 44" palate, but you can use whatever size. Make sure to take out ALL nails and throw them away.

Cutting to Length

You will find two different sizes of wood in the pallet. The bigger boards are called 2 by 4s (you will find that they actually measure 1.75 x 3.5"). The thinner pieces will probably measure about a half-inch thick and 3 to 6 inches wide. Figure out how long to cut your 2 x 4 wood pieces, based on the size of your dogs. Determine the lengths that need to be cut and make the two ends that the thinner pieces will nail to. Cut all but one of the thinner pieces 1/2' from their center points, so that one piece ends up being 1' longer than the other.

Nailing the Frames

Nail or screw the 2 x 4s together as shown. Make two identical pieces- one for the front and one for the back.

Installing the Floors

Use the shorter of the thinner pieces that you cut, space them evenly, and nail them to the top bunk frame. Figure out how high you want the bottom bunk level, and cut and nail the one thin piece you set aside earlier, so the bottom floor can straddle those pieces (giving it a rise). Do this on both frames. Now, install the slats on the bottom bunk, just like you did on the top.

Test It Out!

Leave your bed out overnight and see if your dogs can jump onto the top bunk without a step. If so, you're done, unless you want to paint and decorate your double-decker doggy bed. Although, if your dogs are not able to jump onto the top bunk, you will need to add a stair to help them. Go to the next step for stair instructions.

Step It Up!

From leftover pallet pieces, use any extra scraps to create the step. Depending on the size of your dog, install a step about halfway up to the top bunk. To do this, refer to the picture for how your step could be constructed. Now you may paint your double-decker doggy bed if you wish.
