Doretha Dix Kiosk/Bridge Concept
Hello, I'm Marwan Rahal a 16-year-old attending Apex Friendship High School.
This is my concept for an Entrepreneurial Pop-up being implemented in my town. Hope you enjoy reading through this project and seeing the pictures. This took 20+ hours of 3D modeling as well as 10+ More to complete the physical prototype.

What I'm Trying to Accomplish
In this project, I aim to complete the Entrepreneurial Pop-up criteria of the contest. At Dorthea Dix Park in Raleigh NC, the city plans to do many add ons and revisions to the park over the next few years. This Kiosk is designed to be a food vendor in this park, such as the food vendors in other major parks like Central Park, NYC. I planned for it to be a heavy duty vendor but use recycled materials to be built.
Inspiration
I want the physical model to be built out of a used Shipping Container.
In my area, vendors such as Soda Box execute this concept perfectly. I used them as inspiration for my design. Many other vendors execute the concept of reusable material perfectly. With this, I then assessed the criteria I wanted to achieve.

Concept Sketches
These concept sketches represent what I want to achieve on the outside of my Kiosk as well as the inside. I will implement a generator, three propane tanks, two menus, a water reservoir, a table for takeout, and light bars on the outside of my design. There will be a fryer, cut table, stovetop, refrigerator, shelves, and order-taking table on the inside. There will also be vents to air out the container, remove gases such as carbon monoxide, and cool it down.
3D Model
In the 3D render shown above, I modeled the park as well as where my Kiosk will sit. It will be located near a planned to be pedestrian bridge overlooking train tracks. It will have flood lights on the outside of the Kiosk which will make it useable at night.
Breakdown and Overview
Inside the Kiosk, it will be equipped with a fryer, cut table, stovetop, refrigerator, shelves, and order-taking table. It will also have lights illuminating the inside. On the outside, it will be equipped with the necessities of a food truck:
-Generator
-Three propane tanks
-Water reservoir
-Floodlights
-Two menus
-A takeout table for orders such as Postmates, Uber eats, etc.
Surroundings
The surroundings of the kiosk will be similar to the park as it is now; there will be trees outlining walkways and open fields, a very simplistic design. In my concept, I put not only trees but bushes outlining the walkways as well. One of my criteria was promoting a good mood amongst people when visiting my kiosk. Research shows that people have increased mood when in nature, surrounded by plants and animals. My kiosk will be located in the nature of the park and in turn achieve what is planned.
Kiosk Physical Model (base)
In the physical model of my design, I used three 2x8's and glued them together. This physical model will be a 1/10 scale design of a real shipping container. Once the three 2x8's dried I then used a planing machine to flatten out the sides so extensions can be easily attached. I then cut out the kiosk window with a Dremel and glued it on. Next, I attached the takeout order table and the bracket that will hold the generator and propane tanks. I sprayed a white base coat on the outside of the kiosk and stained the table and bracket. To make a glass-feel on the kiosk window I coated it in blue spray paint and dabbed it with a napkin to get a glare effect. Next, I sprayed a light black paint to make the shipping container have a modern look and make it simplistic.
Kiosk Details
The details I then put on the outside of the kiosk are the propane and water tanks as well as the generator and menus. For the generator, I spray-painted it black. For the propane tanks, I cut 1-inch by .5-inch blocks and grinded them down with the stone sander. I then spray-painted them gray and put some yellow gas tape on them to portray a real-life heavy-duty propane tank. For the water reservoir, I cut a piece of wood as wide as the kiosk and 3/4 an inch tall, then I spray painted it blue. I glued all these additions to the main kiosk. The menus were cut 1.5 inches tall by .5-inches wide. They then were glued to a dowel to offset them a bit from the kiosk body and then nailed into the kiosk body.
Kiosk Sitting
I made the Kiosk sitting from a 4x4 feet piece of plywood and screwed in four 2x4 wood adjacent to the plywood. Then I put some topsoil on the wood and flattened it out, after that, I got 3 sandbags and made another layer on top of that and flattened it out as well. Next, I marked where I needed cement with a spade and dug in plastic forms around that. On the outside of the forms, I put a mix of topsoil and sand, then cement on the inside, and waited for it to dry. Once dried I got moss and put it on the topsoil as a representation of grass.
Setting Details
To detail the setting, I made 3 benches and a swing and got some rocks, baby trees, ferns, etc. I got a stick and stabbed the moss so it stayed in the soil. The benches were made from a 1x.5 piece of wood and the feet were nailed into the sitting part. I made the swing from crown molding, hooks, and chains. The crown molding was cut down to size and nailed together. I then got a circular piece of paper with a stick from a bottle rocket and made an umbrella over one of the benches. Then, to keep the swing in place, I got some rocks and put them around the structure to hold it up. The benches were dug a bit into the ground and then I put some quartz rock formations on the back end of the sitting.
Final
This is the final product of the physical concept model. as you can see it is very nature-like, modern, and friendly-looking. I aim for this to be a food truck kiosk that will be environmentally friendly, located at Dorthea Dix Park in Raleigh NC.
