I started running out of space for storing produce that required low lighting storage and my pantry/closet was already packed. I found some wooden baskets (Knagglig Box) for cheap at IKEA at 8.99 apiece. From there I decided the best way I could utilize the little space I had in my closet was to some how hang these boxes.

Supplies

  • 2 Knagglig boxes
  • 1x3-8' pine board cut in half (ask at store to cut)
  • Wood stain of choice - I used red oak
  • Paint brush and paint bucket
  • Cardboard to paint wood over
  • Corner brace 2'' - 4 pack
  • 4 1' screws
  • 2 x 4 Plate Door Opening Safety Bracket with inner length 1.87'' (found on Amazon)

Paint Wooden Parts

I started with painting the wooden boxes and wooden boards. When you're painting with stain, it's important to not only shake up the paint but to work fast as stains penetrate the wood and requires the painter to spread the stain quickly. I painted the large sides first then set to the side to dry. I tried to pain the smaller sides as much as I could during the painting of the large layer to save time. Once dried, I'd move to the next large sides and finish up the small sides.

Once the paint has dried after a few hours, you can start to assemble the boxes using IKEA's instructions. A power drill or a screwdriver is required for this step.

Connect Baskets to Boards With Braces

Before connecting the boards and baskets, I marked the points where to insert the braces. I marked the first braces to be inserted 30 inches from the top. I then marked the second braces to be inserted the same length from the brace above it. I marked the holes for the braces to be around 1/2'' away from the edge of the boards. I made sure to pre-drill the holes before inserting the screws that came with brace package.

Insert Screws to Secure Baskets to Boards

After inserting the braces, you'll notice that the baskets hang if you stand up the boards. To avoid this, I simply inserted 2 (3/4 - 1'') screws per basket. The screws were inserted near the topmost inner edges of the baskets. I drilled the screws at an angle pointed towards the board to make sure they were secured well.

Insert U-Shaped Brackets

The brackets I bought online came with their own screws, and to avoid unnecessary spending on shorter screws and bolts, I used these. To secure the brackets to the board is pretty straightforward. I made sure to position the brackets in the middle of the topmost board. I marked the first hole per bracket about 1/2'' from the edge of each board. I then pre-drilled each hole before inserting each screw pointed towards the baskets.

Finally, pick up your finished work and hang over a closet door, ideally in the middle, of your choosing!
