So this is Luna, my daughter's beagle, and this article is about how she got her own ramp to the backyard.

Soon after she was gifted to my daughter on her 5th birthday, we realized not having a door to the backyard where she could go out to do her stuff was a big hassle.

My office has a window to the backyard, but was too high for her to come in or out, so I made her town ramp.

Supplies

The list of materials is pretty open as this project does not have a blueprint or anything like that.

In my case, I use a

  • 12 feet 2x8inch plank that I had from a previous demolition project.
  • The only thing I really bought where those black shelf supports.
  • I also used 1 8 feet 1x2inch strip as the hand rail, and some wood screws

I started checking that my idea was feasible first, making a couple tries to see if Luna would use it.

The first thing you'll need is to see what is the space you have for the ramp. In my case I measured from right under the window to about 1 foot raised from the floor, to dissuade other animals to climb into my house. (There are skunks in my neighbourhood)

Then you'll connect the shelf supports to the bottom of your ramp

Mark the wall where you'll drill to attach the shelf supports

Drill the wall in your marks, and add those plastic anchors.

Install the handrail before installing the ramp, as it will be easier than when the complete assembly is in place

Screw the shelf supports to the wall

And the most difficult and rewarding part, convince your dog that what you did is safe enough to use!
