Doc Brown Sunglasses Brought to the Future
These sunglasses are a nod to Back to the Future 2 where Doc Brown comes back from the future to get Marty. The glasses from the movie look pretty cool but weren't functional. This take is a sleeker design and fully functional. You don't need many materials to make these cool sunglasses.
Supplies
PET sheet at least 420mm wide (16") .25mm thick
8% Window tint film
3D printed bow
Strong double-sided tape
All STLs can be found here: https://jasonwinfield.nz/my-stls/
Trim Out Glasses
- Create an SVG from the provided STL (TEMPLATEFLAT.stl) this can be done with Meshmixer (check the video for details).
- Print and cut this template out on paper. Tape the template to your PET sheet, and cut the sheet with some sharp scissors.
Tint PET
- Place the film under the cutout PET sheet for size and trim your film.
- Spray the PET sheet with detergent and water.
- Peel the backing off the tint and spray this with soapy water also.
- Place the tint on the PET sheet and squeeze out the air bubble with your palm and plastic scrapper like an old credit card.
Prepare Bow
The glasses are held together by a PLA bow. Print the attached STL with 100% infill. If you do not have access to a 3D printer you could possibly make the bow out of something else like a wire coat hanger. The print takes about 45 min so you should be able to get it printed very cheaply.
- Apply tape to the outside edge of the bow.
- Trim off the excess.
Marry PET and Bow
Carefully roll the bow across the top edge of the PET sheet
Enjoy
You are all done. The glasses are fully functional.
