Diy Ring With NFC

IMG_20210614_154114__01-01.jpeg

I always wanted to make nfc ring, but the smaller nfc tags were not deliverable to my location and locally i could not find small enough nfc tag to fit into ring. One day for no reason i opened the key chain styled tag which was lying on the table for months and voilĂ  it had small enough chip and the idea of making ring was alive again.

Supplies

Scrap piece of wood (the stronger wood the better)

Cheap arduino compatible nfc tag

Epoxy (two part resin adhesive would also work, i have used same)

and some more complementary supplies like for finishing up the wood in end and to cut the wood in circular shape

you get the idea (you should)

Making the Wooden Base

Take your wooden piece and cut the rough circular around 3mm bigger than the size of finger you want to fit it in.

Here starts the parts which req you to use what you have to cut the middle part of the wood. I have cut another smaller circle in middle and attach it to the motor and cut the wood like on a lathe.

Now sand the part to final dimension, i have the wooden part around 1mm thick.

Take apart the keychain styled nfc tag and wrap the copper enamel wire and solder the small nfc ic(the black thing) to both end the wire (polarity does not matter)

pretty fast... sorry for not having a better pic for explaining

Molding the External Shell

Create the mold to make the external shell from resin and a vaccum chamber would be ideal choice to get rid from air but i create this contraption to get rid of air bubbles, which kind of work but not 100%.

Finishing All Up

Remove the ring from mold and sand it down to desired aesthetics, i have used less red pigment which kind of make it semi transparent and give orangish colour to the ring, i was not actually aiming for such result but i like the end result, an unique look.

And finally sand the resin with finer sand paper and also the wood.

To save the wood from moisture i first make sure get rid of any moisture from ring by making it warm at lower temp for long period time and the soaked the wood in oil for long period of time.
