Today I will be showing you a simple yet warming hot chocolate drink that you can substitute your coffee with, and with a touch of sweetness and is quick to make. With an additional coffee cream on top, perfect for bedtime drink, whilst working on your Instructables, or when you feel cold. Serving portion for one. Contains milk. It is perfect for a snowy blizzard night, also helps to warm you up.

As also you can see, as a student, walking to my bus stop in the mornings and evenings are painfully cold, so whenever I get back home, this is the first thing I do, drink a cup of hot chocolate!

Supplies

A microwaveable mug/cup, always double check to see if it’s microwave safe! You don’t want to learn the hard way like I did…

Approximately 40 grams of chocolate, any type, and add less if you want your hot chocolate less sweet/chocolatey and more if you have a sweet tooth craving.

Milk - Depends on how big your mug is, but I used about 215 ml, can be fat-free or less fat.

Heavy cream/whipping cream - 2 Tbsp, the one you need for your coffee cream, need some fat, or you can use heavy cream, otherwise your coffee cream won’t froth up.

Instant Coffee Powder - Approx. 1 Tbsp, more if you like coffee, or need a coffee boost, less for a mild coffee taste.

Sugar - 3 Tbsp, for the coffee cream, same, add more if you want a sweeter cream, and less, if you prefer a more coffee taste.

Electric beater - To froth up the coffee cream.

Big bowl - To mix stuff in.

Put the milk for the hot chocolate in the mug/cup, then add the chocolate.

Put the mug with the chocolate and milk in the microwave, heat for about 50 seconds, time depends on wattage of your microwave.

Take your mug out of the microwave, use a fork to see if the chocolate has melted, if yes, then mix with the fork until well mixed, otherwise put your mug back into the microwave and heat for another 15 seconds, and then mix. It should have a similar colour as shown above when I made it. This is your hot chocolate, if you don’t want coffee cream, enjoy! If you’d prefer a hint of coffee, scroll down and continue!

Add your sugar, instant coffee powder, and heavy cream. Whip with beater until you reach a smooth consistency. Like shown in the last photo above, if it tastes too bitter (coffee), different instant coffees are different tastes, add more sugar, half a tablespoon at a time, and add more instant coffee to it if it’s too sweet.

Combining

Put your cream you just made on top of your hot chocolate, you can add a bunch more if you prefer, or save the cream for deserts, or other pastries.

Enjoy!

Enjoy your new hot chocolate!

It tastes way better than store bought or powder mixed hot chocolate if you make it right!

Practice makes perfect, don’t worry if it doesn’t work out well for your first time, don’t be ashamed of yourself, I melted down my cup on the first try…

For any other suggestions, please feel free to share in comments! Always looking forward to trying out new things!

Tips

You can have batches of the coffee cream, so instead of having to make it each time, just take it out from the fridge, and serve!

You can substitute the milk with water or lactose free or almond milk.

Best of all, cocoa powder or other powders are not required! So if you have a bunch of chocolates sitting around, this recipe is perfect for you.
