Diversity Puppets

As a registered early childhood educator I created these diversity puppets for a kindergarten placement They reflected the community I was working in and allowed me to inform young children about communities that were less well known. By using a variety of shapes, shades, and sizes I could open up the discussion on diversity. In Kindergarten it is important that the children are able to share the materials.

I choose socks that fit the size of the hands of the children, infant/toddle size 2-4. I also looked for socks that were a variety of skin shades.

To make the mouth cut a piece of cardboard in a figure 8 shape.

Slide the cardboard into the the palm of your hand.

Use a hot glue gun to attach the cardboard to the sock

Cut 4 strips of velcro, velcro has two sides. Attach the coarse side of the velcro on the sock and the soft side to each piece, Be sure to be consistent!

Using a variety of foam pieces, googly eyes, and yarn will give children different options of shapes, shades and sizes.
