Distilling Fog Net + Distill Your Own Water

In many third world countries, getting clean, safe water can be a challenge. So many of these places have devices called fog nets placed in the cloudy mountains. These collect water, but still leave the issue of cleanliness. I will show you a design of mine that will eliminate the major problem, and show you how to make safe drinking water by distilling it.

To make your distiller you will need: A large pot with a lid, a bowl that can get hot without breaking (and that you are ok with getting dirty), a small object to raise the bowl, and some nice, dirty water.

My Design

Ok, so this jumble is my all in one design. There are some things that wouldn't work physically, but my design does the job of explaining the process. I call it "The 2 in 1 Fog Distiller Value Pack". Only kidding. If you look at the left picture you see the net. In real life it would have to be far finer, but that is the best I could do on Tinkercad. The fog would collect on that net, and drip into the trough below (the lower bar). The spiral takes the water into the boiler/distiller. From there it would be heated. In my design I made a small gas heater (picture 2) but the heater could be anything from a wood fire to a blow torch to a repurposed car engine (if you really wanted). The water boils, and then turns to steam. It floats to the hollow semi sphere at the top of the boiler. It has a thin skin, so the cool mountain air condenses the water, then drops it into the second layer. After a little while, the water is ready for harvest. On the right in picture 1, you see the inside of the boiler. It would be necessary for the boiler to remain sealed so that the fog stays out and the steam stays in. This raises another problem, the pressure. I have included a steam valve atop the boiler. This would theoretically relieve the pressure so the boiler doesn't go boom.

How to Make Your Own Distiller

The first step to making your own distiller is gathering the resources listed above. Put the large pot on your stove. Take your dirty water and put it in the large pot. Put your small object in the dirty water, and put the bowl on top. Now you will turn on the stove. Set the lid on top upside down. Leave it for a bit, and voila! You have distilled some nice, pure, drinking water (NOTE: the water may taste a bit strange). To make the process faster, add some ice to the lid.

Great job! You have learned how fog nets work, and how water is distilled. Hopefully your water comes out nicely!
