Dinosaur Fridge Magnets

Turn plastic dinosaur toys into cute little fridge magnets. These cost about $0.50 a magnet to make.

Supplies

You will need:

Plastic Dinosaurs. I use the "Adventure Force 40-Piece Jumbo Bucket Play Set, Dinosaurs" from Walmart, but it's a bonus if you can reuse old toys.

Neodymium Magnets. You can find big packs of these on Amazon. These magnets are the small silver ones that are really strong. I don't recommend using the black magnets. They won't be strong enough.

Durham's Rock Hard Water Putty. This can be picked up at Lowe's or online.

Drill and Drill Bit. You'll need a drill bit that is slightly larger than the diameter of your magnets.

E6000 Glue or Epoxy.

Chop the Dinosaurs

I just used a large kitchen knife. If your knives are dull you might consider trying a utility blade. Cut the dinosaurs in half, being careful to cut the dinosaurs at the angle you want them to rest on the fridge. The first time I made these I made the mistake of cutting them at the wrong angle.

Fill the Hollow Space

Mix the putty according to the instructions on the container. I mix the putty a little on the runny side and fill up the dinosaurs with a spoon. The tricky part is finding a place to put the dinosaurs while the putty dries. I used some wrenches and a bench vice.

Sand the Dinosaurs

Sand the putty smooth by laying a piece of sandpaper down on the floor. Alternatively, use a kitchen knife or a razor blade to smooth the back.

Drill a Space for the Magnet

Find a drill bit that is slightly larger than your magnets. Drill a hole, but be careful to not drill too deeply. You want your magnet to sit halfway into the hole.

Glue

Glue the magnets in. If you want to go the extra mile, align the poles of the magnets so that the heads of the dinosaurs will stick to the butts of the dinosaurs. This way you and your kitchen guests can mix and match dinosaurs. Be careful to not leave your dinosaurs sitting too close to each other as they dry. The magnets can pop out of place and stick to each other making a horrible sticky mess. Let the glue fully dry before using the magnets.

Enjoy Your Magnets

Either use them as is or paint them to match your kitchen decor.
