Plan Your Design
Here is where you determine your personal requirements for what you want this box to allow you to do.
What do you plan on using the box for?
- dice? cards? figures? Paint and craft material?
- This will determine how many compartments and how big they need to be in the bottom part of the box.
What size can you print?
- Restrictions of your 3D printing capabilities will restrict the size of your box. It is wise to print the bottom in on piece to ensure it doesn't split with age. However it is possible to make it larger by splitting it in half and bonding it with glue or ties.
What design do you want?
- Personalize it!
Time to Design!
Design this in your preferred CAD software. Convert to STL file and splice to prepare for 3D printing.
Carefully consider the questions you answered previously in your planning. In my example I went with a hexagonal box with 16mm depth to easily hold dice for dnd game.
On the top, I stenciled a dragon design to easily print and allow clear indication that this box was for dnd games.
On the bottom, I allowed for separation barriers into three sections to hold dice and dnd figurines and keep things separate while storing or while a game in being played.
I have attached the STL files of the prints that I made here. Feel free to use mine as your base and customize it as you need!
Print you Design!
I suggest printing each part individually. A heated bed will help keep the parts from curling up, but I was able to print mine without this feature.
Attach Using Hinges & Clasps
Tie the top and bottom of the box together using small jewelry box clasps and hinges.
I selected a brass set bought from Amazon for pretty cheap.
If desired paint the box before attached hinges and clasp. Also a layer of felt can be glued to the bottom of the box to reduce noise impact if you wish to do things like rolling dice.
OPTIONAL: Paint or Line Your Box
Customize your box more by giving your box more color that your PLA may not provide.
Also lining your box with felt squares reduces sound and bouncing height of your dice. Your can attached the felt using spray adhesive and cardstock cut to the size and shape of the areas you wish to line.
