Detailed Mold Using 123d Catch

This tutorial was made to show how one can use 123d catch to capture a mold of an object instead of the object itself. In this example, we used a mold that i made from plaster. The mold is a cast of a water bottle designed for Ty Nant distilled water by robin Sheppard.  The original bottle was blow molded against a stainless steel mold. This tutorial is meant to show how to capture a mold of an object and is not meant to be used for replication of the bottle design.

The Mold Is Placed on a Surface Where There Is Texture and Pattern

Place mold on a surface that is clearly different than the mold you are trying to capture. Begin using 123d catch to capture the first half of the mold. 123d catch works by capturing surfaces in relationship to light. This mold of the water bottle is perfect in that the mold is made up of curves and negatives and positives that give way to a really nice capture which you will be able to see in the next few steps. 

Upload Capture To

After capturing the two mold halves upload them and wait for catch render the two halves of the molds.

What you finally end up with is a beautiful catch of the two halves of the mold with nice edges and finished surfaces that can then be replicated using 3d printing technology in plaster.
