Derpy Tiger Mask

IMG_1360.jpg

This is a mask of a tiger based on Derpy from the hot Kpop movie. Derpy is described as friendly and somewhat dim-witted and is similar to the average house cat. Unlike the average house cat, Derpy is obsessed with righting knocked over objects. He is a beloved character that is loyal and affectionate. The mask is made by using the printed photo to cut out each object on felt, then hot gluing each part onto the blue face. Once everything is hot glued to the blue face, the entire face is glued onto any animal mask you have laying around. The project is worked by incrementally cutting the template and tracing each part onto the felt before cutting the next part from the template. The best thing about this project is it doesn't have to be perfect: He's supposed to look Derpy!

Print the Template

Print the template. You can make the mask as large as you want. It works to print portrait on a letter sized piece of paper. The sides of his face may be slightly cut off, or the tongue may be slightly cut off, but you can account for that when tracing your pieces onto the felt. The photo attached to this step is the template.

Cut Out and Trace the Tongue, Then Cut the Felt

IMG_1346.jpg

Start by cutting the tongue and tracing it onto the pink felt with a fine tip sharpie. Cut out the tongue, making sure to leave some extra at the top since we will slip it through a slit in the black mouth portion of the felt.

Cut Out and Trace the Blue Face, Then Cut the Felt

IMG_1347.jpg

Cut the blue face and trace it onto the peacock blue felt. Ensure if your printed paper has cut off some portions of the face, use the marker to round out the sides and the bottom part where the tongue was cut. The bottom of the face doesn't really matter as it will be behind the tongue but don't cut the part where you cut the tongue, just leave the blue felt so you have something to glue on top of.

Cut Out and Trace the Black Mouth, Then Cut the Felt

Here again, cut out the black felt without cutting where you cut out the tongue. Cut a slit in the black felt wide enough to fit the tongue.

Cut Out and Trace the Baby Blue Eyes and Ears, Then Cut the Felt

IMG_1350.jpg

Wait until closer to the end to cut the eye holes in the baby blue eye portions. You need to ensure they are positioned directly on top of the eye holes of the pre-existing mask, and you need to ensure the eye holes are positioned so that whoever is wearing the mask is able to see out of the eye holes.

Hold off on cutting the eye holes until later in the project after measuring and ensuring they are in the right place.

Cutting the Eye Holes

IMG_1359.jpg

For this step, both the baby blue eye portion and the black eye portion as well as the dark blue face will need to have circles cut out to ensure the person wearing the mask can see. To do this, I start by placing the animal mask onto the person who will be wearing the mask. Take note of what part of the large animal mask eye holes the eyes are in. For me, this was the bottom middle portion of the eye animal masks eye holes. Then I lay the blue part face down on top of the back of the animal mask and make small circles with my sharpie. You can place the black parts of the eye onto the back side of the mask just to ensure the placement will look ok. Then proceed to cut out the holes. Find a good placement of the blue part of the eye and draw a circle to cut out. Then do the same for the black portion of the eye.

Position Everything Onto the Blue Felt and Hot Glue Down

Follow the template picture for correct positioning. Lay out all the pieces to ensure it looks good. Using hot glue, attach each piece of felt to the blue head. For the layered parts like the eyes, I glued from the bottom up, starting with the baby blue pieces, adding and gluing pieces on top until you get to the black eye slits. The tongue can be placed into the black mouth slit and hot glued on the back of the tongue. Again, it doesn't need to be perfect as he's supposed to look Derpy and not quite right.

Glue the Entire Thing Onto an Animal Mask

Hot glue the completed felt mask onto any animal mask you have lying around. Ensure you've lined up the eye holes so the person wearing the mask can see! You can glue it however you like, but I have only glued the middle portion of the mask, so it looks more full and so that the top and sides don't wrap around the face once it's on. Before you glue it on, hold up the whole thing on the person who will be wearing it to make sure the positioning looks good.
