Delicious Chocolate Football Cake
Hi!
In this Instructable you will create a football (soccer) themed chocolate cake. The cake will have strawberry and cream filling and be covered in butter-cream and fondant. The cake does not include nuts, however it includes several milk products.

Tools and Ingredients
For the Cake: (The recipe creates two cakes with the diameter of 20cm)
320g Butter
200g Dark Chocolate
250g Sugar
8 Eggs
190g Flour
30g Cacao
1 ½ Teaspons Backing Powder
Pinch of Salt
½ Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
For the Filling:
200g Whipping Cream
300g Strawberries
2 packs Gelatine
A bit of lemon juice
Tablespoon of sugar
For the Buttercream: 390 ml Milk
80g Sugar
½ teaspoon Vanilla extract
35g Cornstarch
250g Butter
1 egg yolk
For the Decoration:
500g Fondant
Green Food colouring
Black Food colouring
Red Food colouring
Blue Food colouring
Preheat oven to Top/Bottom Heating 160 degrees Celcius
Butter and Chocolate
- Melt the butter in a pot over medium heat
- When the butter has melted, add the chocolate and let it melt too When everything has melted set aside to cool
Eggs and Sugar
- Crack all eggs into a mixing bowl and mix them shortly
- Add the sugar and vanilla extract and mix well
Other Ingredients
- Add the butter and chocolate mixture to the egg mixture and mix well
- Add the flour, cacao, and baking powder
- Mix everything well, so there are no more lumps
Bake
- Take two 20cm cake tins and coat them with butter
- Divide the cake mixture between the two cake tins You can also just bake one tin at a time with half of the dough
- Put the cake on the middle rack in the oven
- Bake for 25-30 minutes
- When it is done take out and let it cool fully
Filling
- Cut the strawberries into small pieces (about eight pieces)
- Puree the strawberries Add a bit of lemon juice and sugar if necessary
- Prepare the gelatin according to the packaging
- Whip the whipping cream until stiff
- Add the gelatin and whipped cream to the strawberries and mix it all together
- Put in the fridge to cool
- When cooled put it on the cake, but make sure nothing runs out
Butter-Cream
- Take half of the milk and mix it with sugar, vanilla extract, egg yolk, and cornstarch in a pot
- Add the rest of the milk Bring the mixture to boil at medium heat (It will take a while)
- When it is boiling put it into a bowl and cool it at room temperature covered with cling film
- Mix the butter about 5 minutes until it is white and creamy When the pudding mixture has fully cooled off add it one spoon at a time to the butter
- Apply it around the whole cake in a thin layer
Grass Pitch
- Take about 170g white fondant and add a bit of green food colouring
- Always only add little bit off food colouring at a time
- Knead the fondant until the colour has spread through the fondant
- Cover the surface with cornstarch or confectioners sugar
- Roll out the fondant to a 3mm thickness
- Use the cake tin to cut out the shape tor the cake
- Add the fondant carefully
Football Pattern
- Take 120g of white fondant
- Roll it out into the shape of a long rectangle, so that it fits around the cake
- Put the white fondant around the cake and cut off overlapping parts
- Create a template for a pentagon
- Take 80g of white fondant and colour it black
- Roll out the fondant
- Cut out several pentagons
- Place the black pentagons on the cake in a football pattern
- Attach them using the buttercream
Other Details
- Roll out a bit of white fondant very thin
- Use this as the lines and put on top of the cake
- Colour two parts of fondant in two colours of your choice
- Roll them out and cut out the shape of a shirt
- Add them to the top of the cake as well
