Delicious Banana Ice Cream With Chocolate Chips - Without an Ice Cream Machine!

Summer is coming! And as every summer enthusiast knows, there's no such thing as too much ice cream in life!

In this Instructable, we'll see a super simple and quick recipe, to make ice cream without an ice cream machine. This recipe is also really healthy, as there's no added sugar, eggs, or milk, that can be found in normal ice cream. In fact, there's only one ingredient: bananas. Of course, you can tweak the recipe for a more adventurous experience, but more on that later.

Supplies

Bananas - plan 2 bananas per person

Optional:

Chocolate chips, lingonberries, grapes, and other similar additions

Whipped cream - about 1/2 cup for every 5 bananas

The Bananas

The most important thing about this recipe is getting the ripeness of the bananas right. You want the bananas to be on the very right end of the ripeness spectrum, but not in the too ripe territory. Ripe bananas will give you that sweet taste -but too much, and there will be a slightly alcoholic aftertaste to the ice cream.

If you can only find raw and green bananas at the grocery store, here's a quick tip to start enjoying the ice cream sooner:

Place the bananas together with a ripe banana or apple in a paper bag and leave for 24 hours. The ethylene produced by the raw fruit will accelerate the ripening process of the raw bananas. Science!

Cutting and Freezing the Bananas

Start by peeling the bananas. Cut them into small pieces and place them in a zip lock bag or a food container.

Leave in the freezer for at least two hours. If you leave them there longer, no worries, you can just leave them to warm up for five minutes when it's time to blend them.

The Chocolate Chips

If you wish to add some chocolate chips to the ice cream, there's a trick you can use, to turn a solid chocolate bar into smaller chunks:

Place the chocolate in the freezer for a few hours, inside a zip lock bag. Then, use a hammer to break down the now brittle chocolate.

Note: use only dark, good-quality chocolate. Cheaper milk chocolate will have a bland taste compared to the very strong and distinctive flavor of bananas.

Blending

Use a blender or a food processor to turn the frozen bananas into a soft, silky paste. You can also use a handheld food processor - just make sure there are no chunks.

Optionally, you could add some whipped cream for a less healthy option. The advantage of adding cream is that you can put the ice cream back into the freezer, and it will still keep a silky consistency.

The Optional Ingredients

I added some chocolate chips in my ice cream and used some chopped-up dried lingonberries as a topping. You could also use some vanilla, caramelized bananas, or grapes just to list a few ideas.

Enjoy!
