Deep fried watermelon!

This is a very unique twist to the simple watermelon. If you love watermelon, you will surely love this.

I wanted to create something different for the watermelon contest. Hence I decided to just experiment deep frying the watermelon. My family found the taste to be very unique and surprisingly good. The juicy watermelon and crispy outer covering is an amazing combination.

It is quite tricky to get a coating of the batter over the juicy watermelon. With few trials I reached at a good result. I will be sharing with you what I learned while trying to create the deep fried watermelon. I sugar coated it while serving. Hope you like it too.

If you like it, please do vote for me. I will be on cloud nine.

Thank you!

With a fork just beat the egg whites till lightly fluffy.

Take a bowl and add All purpose Flour, Corn Flour and Baking Soda.

Then add the egg white. Slowly add water so that a batter is formed. The batter should not be of a loose consistency.

This is to coat the watermelon slices.

Slice

P7202839.JPG

Slice the watermelon into triangular pieces.

For this, first slice in the middle.

Then try getting the triangular slice.

You can keep it rectangular or square or anything.

Coat

Dip the watermelon slice in the batter. Coat it well on both the sides.

Points learnt from my trials:
As the water melon slices have a good amount of water content the batter should be made tight.

So when the slices are dipped into the batter more water from the water melon will go into the batter making it a loose batter.

Deep Fry

Take oil in a hard bottom pan.

Keep the flame in high and heat the oil till bubbles appear.

Lower the flame to medium and test with a pea size of batter.

If it fries right away and rises up immediately then the oil is of right temperature.

Now add the slice of water melon one by one. When one side has turned golden brown and done turn over to the other side.

The total time for frying for each slice will take only 1 minute (or even less).

Points learnt from my trials:

Since there is water content in the watermelon there will be spluttering of oil. You can wear a hand gloves for safety.

Variations

After frying take out the excess oil from the fried watermelon with a tissue paper.

Variations:

  • I have prepared few without coating it with sugar.
  • Few of them I coated them with sugar.

Both were equally good. If you prefer less sugar you can continue without the sugar coating.

For Sugar coating:

If you want to sugar coat it you can do it.

Powder the sugar if it is crystal form or else you can used powdered sugar.

Place the fried watermelon over the powdered sugar. Coat both sides.

Serve

Ways to serve:

  • You can serve it as it is. I made few of them triangular and other few square shaped. You can get creative with the way you serve.
  • After coating both the sides with sugar, make a small slit on the base or the longer side of the triangular piece. Insert the popsicle stick.

Your deep fried watermelon is ready.

I love the juicy texture of the watermelon inside with crisp outer covering.

The sugar coating, the deep fried layer and the juicy watermelon together gives a beautiful blend of flavor and texture.

Hope you like it.
