Decorative Epoxy Resin Crystals
This Instructable will show you how to make stylish and cute mini crystals using epoxy resin. This recipe makes about three crystals of varied sizes. You can use colors and flakes of your choice, so this craft is completely customizable.
Supplies
- Epoxy Resin Hardener and Epoxy Resin
- Liquid Resin Dye
- Gold/Silver/Rose Gold Metallic Flakes
- Small Measuring Cup (in mL)
- Crystal Mold
- Popsicle Stick(s)
- Disposable Gloves
- Placemat (optional, but resin will stick to any surfaces that it is applied to)
- Sandpaper (optional)
Prepare the Resin
First, we prepare the resin. My recommendation is to put on gloves before attempting these steps, as well as to place your placemat on the work surface before beginning.
Then, grab your Measuring Cup and fill it up exactly 20 mL with Epoxy Resin. After, add 20 mL of Epoxy Resin Hardener. Mix with your popsicle stick until there are no more "streaks" inside your resin and the mixture is crystal clear. Once your mixture is clear, move on to the next step.
Pour the Resin and Prepare the Mold
In this step, we will prepare the mold and pour the resin into it. Make sure that your molds are completely clean and free of excess dried resin from other projects. Carefully pour your resin mixture into your mold(s) and wait at least 10 hours for it to set. If the resin is a bit bendy/squishy or not completely hard, you should let them set longer. If they don't harden after a few days, you might have mixed uneven amounts of hardener and resin, or you didn't mix thoroughly enough. I recommend letting them harden overnight.
Finishing Touches
In this final step, we will finish up our resin creations. To start, pop the resin out of your mold. Then, you can (optional) use sandpaper to buff the uneven or rough edges of the crystals. After sanding, you should wash the dust off in a sink. Voila! All done!
