Davy Jones Pirate Hat
Materials:
*cheap sunhat
*paper maché (flour, water, newspaper)
*yellow and brown acrylic paint
*hot glue gun and sticks
*black material
*shells
*moss
Start With a Cheap Sunhat
*I bought a sunhat from the dollar store to use as my base
Make the Shape You Want
*Using cardboard, tape, and string I pulled the hat into the shape I wanted. It doesn't have to be too sturdy because the paper maché will solidify it.
Apply Paper Maché
*Create mixture of flour and water so that it is about the consistency of thick cream. You can add more/less flour to preference.
*Tear up newspaper into thin strips, about 1 inch wide. These can always be torn into smaller pieces for tricky areas.
*Dip newspaper strips into flour mixture and run between fingers to remove excess liquid.
*Apply wet strip to the hat and make sure the paper is flat and smooth
*Continue applying strips until the hat is covered
*Let dry
*You may have to do this several times to allow one side to dry before starting on the other side.
Cut Some Material Strips
*Cut thin strips of black material, these will be applied like the paper maché was
Apply Material Strips to Hat
*Dip material strips into flour/water mixture
*Apply to hat as was done with the paper strips
*Let dry
Paint the Rim
*Paint the rim with yellow/brown acrylic paint ~1cm in width.
*Paint both the top and bottom sides of the rim
Apply Moss and Shells
*Using hot glue, stick some shells around the hat and glue moss around the shells.
*Create clusters all around the hat, covering most of the hat
Voila!
Set it up, and there you go! Take a step back and enjoy your handiwork!
