Davy Jones Pirate Hat

Making a Davy Jones Pirate Hat

Materials:

*cheap sunhat

*paper maché (flour, water, newspaper)

*yellow and brown acrylic paint

*hot glue gun and sticks

*black material

*shells

*moss

Start With a Cheap Sunhat

*I bought a sunhat from the dollar store to use as my base

Make the Shape You Want

*Using cardboard, tape, and string I pulled the hat into the shape I wanted. It doesn't have to be too sturdy because the paper maché will solidify it.

Apply Paper Maché

*Create mixture of flour and water so that it is about the consistency of thick cream. You can add more/less flour to preference.

*Tear up newspaper into thin strips, about 1 inch wide. These can always be torn into smaller pieces for tricky areas.

*Dip newspaper strips into flour mixture and run between fingers to remove excess liquid.

*Apply wet strip to the hat and make sure the paper is flat and smooth

*Continue applying strips until the hat is covered

*Let dry

*You may have to do this several times to allow one side to dry before starting on the other side.

Cut Some Material Strips

*Cut thin strips of black material, these will be applied like the paper maché was

Apply Material Strips to Hat

*Dip material strips into flour/water mixture

*Apply to hat as was done with the paper strips

*Let dry

Paint the Rim

*Paint the rim with yellow/brown acrylic paint ~1cm in width.

*Paint both the top and bottom sides of the rim

Apply Moss and Shells

*Using hot glue, stick some shells around the hat and glue moss around the shells.

*Create clusters all around the hat, covering most of the hat

Voila!
