Dark Chocolate LEGO Cake

Most of us as kids have played with LEGO’s at least once in our lives so now it’s time to bring that imagination into baking! The reason I picked Dark Chocolate is because Dark Chocolate is a little bit healthier compared to regular milk chocolate. This is to even out the less healthy Oreo’s. Either way there is going to be lots of chocolate in this project.

I decided to build a LEGO cake using Oreo’s instead of marshmallows. I was inspired to do this project, because I like two things, LEGO’s and chocolate! As a kid I loved buying the most recent Star Wars LEGO sets. I hope this project can bring in other LEGO creators to try to bake their favorite shape, the LEGO brick. If anyone who wasn’t into LEGO’s as a child, you can still build your favorite dark chocolate cake! Just don’t step on this LEGO!

Ingredients and Materials

Cake Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 3/8 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder (1/4 cup + 1/8 cup)
  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon of baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon of salt
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup of cold brewed coffee (Original or Decaf)
  • ½ cup of milk
  • ¼ cup coconut oil (or you can use vegetable oil)
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar

Cake Materials:

  • Oven
  • Coffee Maker
  • Shortening
  • Electric Mixer (Optional)
  • Mixing spoons
  • Large and Medium sized bowls
  • Liquid measuring cup (specified in Directions and Ingredients)
  • Measuring spoons and cups (specified in Directions and Ingredients)
  • 6 Mega Stuff Oreo’s

Frosting Ingredients:

  • 2 ¾ cups powdered sugar (confectioners’ sugar)
  • 6 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 6 tablespoons of salted butter
  • 5 tablespoons 2% milk (2 Oz.)
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Frosting Materials

  • Conventional oven
  • Electric Mixer (Optional)
  • Mixing spoons
  • Large, Medium, and small sized bowls
  • Liquid measuring cup (specified in Directions and Ingredients)
  • Measuring spoons and cups (specified in Directions and Ingredients)
  • Sifter
  • Frosting knife
  • Hot pads
  • Microwave (Optional)
  • Cutting board (Used to flip the cake over onto a flat surface)

Preparing the Oven

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C)

Preparing the Dish

Grease and flour the loaf dish (5.25 x 9 x 7.25 in or 1.5 Qt)

Creating the Cake Mixture

Use a large bowl to combine the flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Form a well in the center of the dry mix to pour the liquid ingredients in. Pour in the egg, coffee, milk, vinegar, and oil. Mix together until smooth or until there are no longer chunks.

Pour in the Batter

Pour the batter into the completed dish.

Baking the Cake

Bake for about 35-40 minutes in the oven until the toothpick inserted is clean. If the toothpick contains chocolate, put it into the oven for about 2-5 more minutes. Once done baking, allow it to cool down.

Sifting the Sugar Mixture

Now it is time to create the frosting. In a medium-sized bowl, sift in the powdered sugar and powdered cocoa and set it aside.

Mixing the Ingredients Together

Get out another large bowl and cream the butter until smooth. If you like you can soften the butter in the microwave, but make sure not to melt it. Gradually put in the dry sugar mixture along with the milk. Next add the vanilla extract. Beat the mixture until it looks thick and voluminous. If it's too thick, add a little more milk and mix it once more.

Frosting the Cake

After the cake has cooled down, use a flat surface like a cutting board to get the cake out of the loaf dish. Use a frosting knife to start frosting the cake. Make sure to add enough frosting to the cake so the cake doesn't crumple.

Oreo Time!

Now it is time to add the Oreo's. Take out 6 Oreo's and place them in a 2 x 3 area to make it look like a LEGO block.

Frosting the Oreo's

Frost the Oreo's until each one is entirely covered. If needed, take the Oreo's one by one and frost them individually.

Decoration!

Decorate the cake anyway you want to. For example, you can add a LEGO symbol using more frosting or you can add sprinkles. I didn't decorate mine, but you may certainly can!
